"smile. someone needs it."

The halls were loud. They always were. The mathematics hall was hell to get through and it just so happened that my locker was there. I never really complained though because Carlson Ewan had the locker just to the right of mine. I could always get a nice view of the back of his head. I pulled my Chem textbook out of my locker and closed it with a huff. I walked into the sea of students and speed walked past the chattering freshmen.
I got to my Chem class and sat near the back. Carlson put his books down on the desk and sat next to me with a ghost of sadness in his eyes. I looked up at him shocked, he hadn't spoken to me since grade eight.
"Oh! I'm sorry, I'll," he paused, scanning the room. "Move."
I remembered today's fortune and my palpitating heart.
I smiled at him.
"No, it's okay, please sit."
He was quiet, for once.
"Thank you."
