An ekphrastic poem is one based on art. The external link is the painting I based this on.

(First Draft) Kiran's Spotlight.

The crowd sits hushed

as the music begins.

It’s a solo,

Kiran’s spotlight.

The little ballerina dances.

Pliés, pirouettes, grand jetés.

She trips and gets back up,

going on with the routine,

faking the smile for the audience.

She moves to the music’s waltz

getting back the lost rhythm.

She has another big jump

landing it this time.

Her smile is true.

She does her big finish

a fouetté en tournant,

spinning a dizzying amount.

She jumps on her toes then

Slowly moves her feet.

She purposely falls to the floor

Landing in a split before moving again

She sits in the ending pose

As the music

comes

to a

gentle

stop.

(Second Draft) This version was workshopped in my poetry class.

The crowd sits hushed

as the music begins.

Kiran’s spotlight.

The little ballerina dances.

Pliés, pirouettes, grand jetés.

She trips and gets back up,

going on with the routine,

faking the smile for the audience.

She moves to the music’s waltz

getting back the lost rhythm.

She has another big jump

landing it this time.

Her smile is true.

She does her big finish

a fouetté en tournant,

spinning and spinning and spinning.

She jumps on her toes then

Slowly moves her feet.

Landing in a split before moving again

She sits in the ending pose

As the music comes to a

gentle stop.

Here is the FINAL REWRITE:

Kiran's Spotlight

The crowd sits hushed

as the music begins.

Kiran’s spotlight.

The little ballerina dances.

Pliés, pirouettes, grand jetés.

She trips and gets back up,

going on with the routine.

Just smile for the audience.

Getting back the lost rhythm,

she’s graceful to the music’s waltz.

She has another big jump

landing it this time.

Her smile truer.

A grand finale,

the fouetté en tournant,

spinning and spinning and spinning.

She jumps on her toes once

And slowly slides her feet.

Landing in a split before moving again

She sits in the ending pose

As the music

comes to a

gentle stop.
