Hankyung was recruited from among three thousand applicants who auditioned for the first overseas casting auditions held by SM in Beijing 101, China.
Also in 2000,
Leeteuk, Yesung, Eunhyuk were recruited from among applicants who auditioned for the SM annual casting system in Seoul, South Korea.
In 2001,
Donghae and Sungmin who participated in SM-sponsored contest, jointly won first place and became trainees.
In 2002,
Heechul and Kangin were recruited.
Also in 2002,
Kibum was recruited after discovering him in Los Angeles, California by a casting agent.
In 2003,
Siwon was being scouted and made trainee.
In 2004,
Shindong became a trainee.
Also in 2004,
Ryeowook won Chin Chin Youth Festival singing competition. He started as a trainee two months prior debut, in 2005.
In 2005,
Kyuhyun won third place in Chin Chin Youth Festival. He joined the group six months after debut, in 2006.

The members already had experiences in other fields (actor, MC, model, radio host). Most of them have appeared in television and media before. Heechul and Kibum were already established actors.
