15 - Where I Read

I once phoned my boss to say I'd be late for work.

"Aren't you feeling well?" he said.
Some madness gripped me and I told the truth.
"I'm reading a book and I have to finish it. I can't not know what happens next."
True story.

I wasn't fired. And I can't remember the name of the book. He was a wonderful man and fellow bibliophile who gave me three Corgi SF Collector's Library editions for my birthday:
- Arthur C. Clarke's "Reach for Tomorrow"
- Brian Aldiss' "Barefoot in the Head"
- George R. Stewart's "Earth Abides"

I prefer the printed word but frankly, in a pinch, anything will do. A phone, kindle, laptop (not my favourite) and tablet. I've even been known to read labels on shampoo bottles. It's probably clear I love reading.

Where? Truthfully, everywhere. I'm one of those people who, with the slightest provocation (let's be honest, even without) will read while brushing my teeth, my hair, making tea and even went through a stage of doing it during yoga. Sadly, I can't read in a bus or car. One of life's crueller tricks.

However, my favourite has got to be the bath.

As you can see I pile up a selection. I sample a chapter or two from the books that resonate with my current mood and then I strike. I pick one and read it cover to cover until my toes wrinkle and shiver from cold.

Other good spots I fight my cat for include bed, the couch and outside on the deck.
To mangle a good travel quote - reading is a journey, forget the location.
