"I'm not ready for this. I can't do this. What was I thinking!" I started hyperventilating. "Calm down Mia. You're gonna get wrinkles if you stress too much." "I'm not worried about wrinkles! I'm worried I might have a panic attack on the first day of senior freaking year! Oh my god, what If I start sweating in front of a cute guy?" "I thought you got over your whole fear of talking to hot guys." "Well you thought wrong." Annoyance filled my tone of voice. "Okay okay. No need to be feisty. But guys like that from a girl so keep it up." Silence filled the line. "Amelia? You still there?" "I never know when to take you serious." All I hear is a sigh from the other line. "Look, you'll be fine. You'll make a friend, you'll find a cute guy that you WONT sweat in front of, and you'll have an AMAZING senior year!" "I hope you're right." "I know I'm right! I'm Donna freaking Harper! I'm always right!" "What about that time that you thought dreads would look good on you?" "Let us not speakth of that tragic moment!" All I could do was laugh. Suddenly my mom burst in my room. "MY BABY IS A SENIOR!" " I gotta go, I'll call you after school." "Yea I gotta go too. And I want ALL the juicy info from today!" "I'll try to make my day worth writing a novel about for you." I ended the call and my mom took a surprise picture of me. "That is going up on Instagram!" "If ANY pictures of me are going up on social media they better be nice." "Ugh! Fine." Defeated, my mom waited till I got in a good position. Once the picture was taken she began to cry. "What's wrong?" I walked over to her to comfort her. "What am I going to do when you're gone? Who am I going to watch Americas next top model with?" "I bet Jax would love to company you." Jax is the family dog that we had since I was 10. He's already 12 so he is a perfect TV companion. She just rolled her eyes in response. "I made breakfast, come and eat before we leave." "Since when do you make breakfast?" "Because this is a new beginning for all of us and we could all use some change in our lives. And plus your father is off today." "Ah, gotcha." We finally reach the kitchen were my dad, Jackson, and my brother, Stephan, are already eating. "There's my little senior!" My dad walked up to me and gave me a huge hug. "Yep, that's me. The senior that has no life." I walk over to Stephan and sit next to him. "Isn't it a little pathetic that you haven't been to public school since elementary?" "Isn't it a little pathetic that you're 22 living with mom and dad and you still have no job?" "At least I can talk to people without sweating." "And what people are those? The ones on your xbox?" "That's enough." My dad broke our fight up. After that I ate my breakfast in silence. "Alright we have to go or you're gonna be late." My mom said, putting her phone and wallet in her purse. I quickly put my plate in the sink and say bye to Jax and Stephan. I grab my book bag and take a final look in the mirror. I try to fix my blonde ash Afro and put on peppermint Chapstick. I let out a sigh, then head outside.
We finally reach Mellow Lake High school. My parents look back at me. "Here I go." Before I close the car door my dad yells, "Don't do drugs!" They drive out of the drop off area and ride into the sunset. I sigh once again. "Here I go." Yeah, here goes my freedom.
Once I enter the school,it's humongous. There's students everywhere. The anxiety starts to build up. Its okay Amelia, you can do this. I try to calm myself down, it's not really working. I head to the front office to get assigned a welcome buddy. Once I get there, everyone looks depressed. Was there a funeral I wasn't aware of? I walk up to the front desk lady. "Hi, my names Amelia Jacobs. I'm a senior and I'm new here." She stares at me for what feels like an eternity. "Here is a list of your classes. Take a seat and wait for your welcome buddy." Well isn't she just chirpy! She points me to a row of chairs behind me and I wait patiently. It's freezing and there's dead silence. I jump when I hear arguing in the room behind me. "It was a joke! Lighten up!" I hear a guy talking. "A joke?! You got in a fist fight the FIRST day of school. You almost gave the kid a concussion!" A woman responds to the guy in defense. "Okay that's a bit of a exaggeration don't you think?" "Dios mio, I can't with you Nathan." I hear the door open and the woman comes out with the guy following. "Get your detention slip." She demands him. He just groans in response. Once she's done talking to the guy she looks into my direction. "Oh! You must be the new student!" She dust herself off and let's her hand out. "I'm principal Baker." She was a tall Spanish curvy woman with long ash blonde hair. I shook her hand. "Hi, I'm Amelia Jacobs." "What a lovely name! I see you already got your classes." "Yes I did. I'm supposed to be assigned a welcome buddy." "Ah yes! Welcome buddy." She seemed a bit agitated from her conversation with the guy. Then her eyes light up and she turns around. She grabs the guy and sets him face to face with me. "Meet your new welcome buddy!" "What!" He looks at her with disbelief. "Would you rather have welcome buddy duty as your punishment or washing the football teams shoes for the rest of the month?" Without any delay he raises his hand up and waves at me. "Hi I'm Nathan Baker." "Baker?" I ask in confusion. "Yes. Unfortunately I'm her son." He points at principal Baker. I motion my mouth into a "O" in response. "You will show her around after school is over but until the first bell rings get to know each other." She lets out a breathe. "Now, I have business to attend to so.. Make friends." She walks away and leaves me and Nathan alone. He looks me in the eye. OH GOD HE'S HOT. His messy jet black hair makes his light emerald green eyes pop. He has on a grey short sleeve shirt that shows off his tan toned arms with dark blue fitted jeans and black and white converses. Suddenly felt sweat coming I look away. Conceal don't feel, conceal don't feel. "What's your name?" He breaks the silence. "What?" I look back up from my shoes to his face. "Your name. What is it?" "Oh. Uh.. Jacobs." "Your first name is Jacobs?" "Oh no that's my last name." He looked at me like he was waiting for something. "And your first name isssss" "Oh right yeah it's Amelia." Finally understanding what he meant I smile like a idiot. He just looks at me weird. "Okay well let me see your classes." I hand him my two stapled papers. Nathan let out a quick laugh. "What." I ask, a little concerned about what he's laughing at. "Your classes suck" I was a little taken back. "I actually kinda like the classes they gave me." He looked up at me without moving his face from the paper. He handed me the papers. "Lucky for you, we have a class together." "Which one?" "English." "Oh. Cool." Smooth Mia. Smooth. Finally the bell rang. Saved by the bell. "Alright well after classes, meet me on the bleachers." "Okay, sounds good." He left me there all alone, confused on where to go. So much for a welcome buddy. I looked at my paper and tried to find the class number. Room 692. I walk up to the front desk. "Excuse me, where is room 692?" Without looking up from her computer screen she speaks. "Go upstairs, enter the first door, go all the down the hall and it's on the left." "Thank you." "Mhm." Totally disregarding her response I head upstairs.
