"how's school, elliot"

dad asked

and I shrugged.

"okay"

I lied.

But that shouldn't matter.

Everyone lies.

Silence passed over us

as dad stared at me

with sadness clouding his face.

"i'm sorry"

he whispered.

"i'm so sorry for everything i did to you"

"i wasn't in my right state of mind and"

he took in a deep breath

and stared at me with watery eyes.

"and i ruined your life because of it"

he sniffed and rubbed his nose.

A frown settled over my face.

"it's okay, dad"

"it wasn't all you"

He froze at this and looked up at me.

"what"

he whispered,

and I just shrugged.

"people aren't the kindest at times"

I smiled sadly at him,

and the tears finally broke free from his eyes.

"oh, honey"

he cried,

pulling me in for a hug.

"it's all my fault"

I froze in his arms,

before reaching my hand up

to rub up and down his back.

"it's fine dad"

"it's fine"

He continued to shake

underneath my fingertips.

"it'll all be fine"
