The Night Shift

1:47am Tuesday

"Western Star Storage, what can I help you with?"

"Brenner, hey it's, it's Selene."

"Selene! Hi how are you?"

"Tired, the usual. How are you?"

"I'm great! I wasn't sure if I was going to hear from you again."

"Oh sorry, I hope I'm not bothering you-"

"No, of course not!"

"Oh okay, cool."

"So uh, how, how was school?"

"You sounded so awkward then, it was good I guess. I had a nap during study hall so that was nice."

"Ah I remember study hall, best class ever."

"Hey you said you were at college?"

"Yeah, I'm getting a business degree. What about you, what do you want to study once you graduate?"

"I'd like to be a doctor."

"Oh wow, that's cool. It's a lot of work, a mate of mine was studying that and he just about quit 'cause of the workload."

"Yeah, but I've got plenty of time to study when I don't sleep much, hey."

"Ha, true."

"So, how do you keep up with your study with you working the night shift?"

"A lot of my classes are in the afternoon and early evening. Plus; I don't have much to do around here so I usually study while I'm here."

"Ah makes sense."

"Yeah, hey want to play twenty questions?"

"Twenty questions, really?"

"Yes of course, I'll go first. What's, what's your favourite colour?"

"Favourite colour really?"

"Yes really, now come on answer the question,"

"You're like a big kid, seriously."

"Hey I'm 20-years-old, I'm a responsible young adult thank you very much."

"Okay, okay. My favourite colour is blue."

"Oh nice, mine too. Okay your turn to ask a question."

"Hmm okay, what's your favourite thing to do?"

"Ah that's a tough one, I'd probably have to say going to the beach. I have a dog, Caelin he's two and he loves to swim in the ocean, don't you buddy. My boss lets me bring him to work as a sort of guard dog I guess."

"Oh wow, that's amazing. I wish I had a dog. One of my friends from school has an Akita and every time I go to her place all I do is play with him. What kind of breed is Caelin?"

"He's a German Shepherd, very energetic and he just loves to chew on my toes to wake me up, you wouldn't like it if I did that to wake you up hey buddy?"

"Interesting visual,"

"Oh yeah I just got that one, don't worry Caelin, your toes are safe."

"I heard a yawn, time to say goodnight. Say goodnight Caelin."

"I can't believe he barked, smart dog. Okay, good night guys. It was nice chatting again; I'll talk to you soon?"

"You bet, have a good night sleep Selene."

"Thanks Brenner, night."
