I looked over to Katniss, the dark bags under her eyes indicating she was suffering from the nightmares again. The nightmares that still creep into my sleep after five years. The nightmares we share.
We had left the kids at home with Gale and his new family from district 2 as well as Haymitch, hoping that they wouldn't poison them and decided to take a walk.
"Look Peeta," murmured Katniss, her head now resting on my shoulder. She pointed forwards to the sun setting behind the forest and making the sun glow a glorious orange.
"You remember," I grinned. She gave me a small smile in return and began to walk up a small hill. I trailed cautiously behind her.
She rested her hands on her hips and stood proud, even if there was nothing to be proud of at this current moment. The small wedding ring I gave her when we said our proper vows glittered in the fading sun and her eyes sparkled.
"What's for dinner?" I asked simply, plopping down on the soft grass and pulling off my shoes. She followed after me and dug her toes into the soil.
"Turkey? Chicken? Don't ask me!" She shrugged, honestly unsure. She turned to look at me, a smile playing on her lips.
"Let's do something crazy!" She suggested. I raised a single eyebrow and gave her a questioning glance. Her sweet giggles were the only answer.
"Prim and I..." She drifted off at the mention of her dead sister. I can speak easily of my dead family, for they never truly cared, Prim on the other hand is a complete different story. A gave her a look saying you don't have to tell but she continued on anyway, "We, we used to roll down the hills when we were younger and end up with these funny crowns on our heads made from twigs and flowers. I thought it'd be nice to make more of that memory."
She looked at me nervously, just long enough for me to see the tears prickling on the edge of her eyes. I felt myself nodding as soon as she turned away.
"Best. Idea. Ever." God, why do I have to sound so much like a little boy? It's a surprise Katniss even puts up with me...
"Beat you down there!" She winked before throwing her shoes down the hill and rolling after them. A hearty laugh rose in my throat and before I knew it, I was rolling fast, the world only a blur of sky and ground.
I reached the bottom, Katniss lying on her back laughing her heart out. She hadn't been like this in ages. Maybe things were finally coming together... Like she said, a messy crown of random flowers she would easily know by name, grass and twigs stuck out at random angles around her head. I reached a hand up to my own head and plucked a single white daisy from the crown.
I held my hand out to Katniss, only for her to find the daisy resting in my hand.
"Thank you," she whispered before snuggling into me. We looked up to the sky and waited until a blanket speckled with white dots replaced the orange sunset.
We wore our flower crowns till bed that night and Katniss kept the white daisy preserved in that adorable little scrapbook of hers.
