No one wishes to be alone in this world, not even a werewolf.

The Mating Ball caters for that. It's an event hosted every year by the Alpha of Alpha's and it's where unmated wolves, from across the area, come together in hopes of finding that one person that they were destined to be with. Women put on their best ball gown, men put on their best suit and they spend the entire night aimlessly dancing with strangers, eating fancy food, talking to way too many people and basically refusing to leave until they find the one.

They say that looking into the eyes of the person that were made for you is the best feeling in the world. Everything around you freezes and, suddenly, it's just the two of you, lost in each other's eyes as the bond that will only grow stronger with time, forms at that very moment. It's love at first sight and, before you even know it, you're surrounded by their addicting scent and you find yourself craving nothing but them.

Some girls find that incredibly romantic.

Me?

I think it's bullshit.

"Miss Aviana? Are you ready? The Luna's getting impatient." I'm whisked out of my thoughts as soon as I heard the voice of Tommy, a guard, from outside my room. He was knocking on my door repeatedly and he wasn't going to stop until I answered, something he always did that I hated with a passion.

I put the tube of mascara down and opened the drawer where I kept my gloves. "I'm almost ready, I'll only be a few more minutes."

I let out a sigh of relief as soon as the knocking stopped and then slowly began to put on my gloves, one at a time.

There was nothing special about them, they were just plain, black gloves that covered my hands and stopped at the wrists. I had become accustomed to them and I couldn't help but think about the days where I used to cry when I was forced to wear them. I used to hate them but, as I grew, I came to realise that they made me feel safe and normal.

When I was finished, I took a step back and stared at myself in my mirror.

My blonde hair cascaded down my back in curls that I had quickly done, my lips were coated with lip balm and I had applied some mascara on my eyelashes which enhanced the blue of my eyes. I didn't like wearing makeup, it always made me feel uncomfortable and I always ended up wanting to wash it all off my face. Plus, I wasn't very good at it and I couldn't comprehend how some girls could do it so well nor how they could do it every day.

My eyes then moved away from my face and onto my outfit. It was quite a simple black dress that stopped just below my knees. It had nothing that would draw attention to myself, no other colours or intricate designs, and that was just how I wanted it. I had paired the dress with plain, black flats and, of course, my gloves that I never left anywhere without.

I just wanted to blend in and go by unnoticed, just like I had at all the previous balls. I didn't need a mate, I didn't want a mate and I couldn't care less if I never found my mate.

With yet another sigh, I grabbed my purse and walked out of my room. I was absolutely dreading the ball, but there was nothing I could do about it. Father said that attending was a necessity and Father was always right.

Reluctantly, I went down the stairs of the pack house, knowing that everyone was waiting outside, all ready to go. The pack house was deadly silent and I couldn't help but feel incredibly creeped out since it was usually filled with all sorts of sounds and screams and laughter. It was unusual.

Once outside, I began to make my way towards the front of the pack house since that was where all the noise was coming from. Everyone was piling into cars and complimenting each other and, as usual, no one noticed me.

"Aviana? What the hell took you so long? Do you know how long we've been waiting for you?" Trina, my step-mother and the Luna of the pack, sneered as soon as she caught sight of me. She was clearly disgusted by my choice of outfit and made no effort to hide that.

I bowed my head as a sign of submission and respect before I spoke. "I apologise, Luna. It won't happen again."

In the corner of my eye, I saw a smirk begin to form on her lips. I never knew why, but me, her step-daughter, stepping back and showing her submission and defeat always seemed to satisfy her. She was a power hungry, evil woman, who thought everyone was beneath her, even the daughter of the Alpha. Even the daughter of her husband.

"I don't even understand why she's going, Mom!" Said a sickly sweet voice that never failed to annoy me to no end. "It's not like the freak is going to find a mate, everyone knows she doesn't have one."

I looked up and locked eyes with Bronte, my step-sister who hated me with a passion. I watched as her Mother agreed with her and as the two erupted into snickers. I said nothing and did nothing, I was used to them by now.

I had first met Bronte and Trina when I was nine years old. Father had found himself a new Luna, and she just happened to have her own daughter. I had been excited, I thought that I was finally going to have a friend, I thought I was finally going to have someone who would take the time to know me and not treat as a freak. Because we would be family.

But that wasn't the case, Bronte Marshall hated me the second she laid eyes on me.

"Bronte, darling, you look wonderful!" Came the deep voice of my Father, who appeared out of nowhere and planted a kiss on both Trina and Bronte's cheeks.

He ignored me, as per usual. Our relationship had become non-existing, ever since what happen ten years ago. I knew he no longer saw me as his daughter, but as a burden who he couldn't get rid of.

Bronte smiled sweetly and gave my Father a hug. "I wanted to look perfect for my mate."

As much as I hated to admit it, she did look perfect. She always did, but tonight it seemed as though she had put in a lot more effort than usual. Her long, ginger hair was curled to perfection, her brown eyes popped with eyeliner and her lips were painted a rosy red. She wore a lacy, red gown that hugged all her curves and she had paired the dress with very high heels, gold bracelets, and gold earrings.

I was nothing compared to her. I was a shadow, a shadow that nobody noticed. That nobody wanted to notice.

"Well, then! Let's get into the car everyone, the Mating Ball awaits!" Trina spoke, watching as an Omega opened the door and bowed to us.

I was the last to get into the car and, unfortunately, I was stuck sitting next to Bronte.

The car was alive with the sound of Bronte and Trina's gossiping and laughter. As usual, they were putting everybody else down so that they could appear superior. Father, like myself, sat silently, listening to the conversation between his wife and her daughter, smiling and nodding in the right places. But, it was obvious that his attention was somewhere else.

I looked out of the window, blocking them out and instead, focusing on the trees we passed on our journey.

Unlike everybody else, I was dreading the Mating Ball.
