Chapter 2;

Kate p.o.v

Ok, deep breath, I reminded myself as I stood on the doorstep of my parents house. I knocked, fully aware that I was late for the dinner and that they would be pissed off.

Mum awnsered, looking flushed. "You're late!" She scalded as she pulled me quickly inside, into the hallway.

"Sorry, I got caught up at work and my phone died." I explained. That wasn't true at all - I had just put off coming here for as long as possible.

"Well hurry up and get sat down in the dining room - everyone is there already and we are just about to eat." She literally shoved me in the direction of the dining room as she hurried into the kitchen.

I found myself taking another deep breath before I opened the door. I stepped inside and the babble of conversion died instantly. Well, I can certainly make an entrance.

"Ahh, and here's my beautiful daughter now!" Dad boomed from the head of the table. I cringed instantly, hating being the centre of attention. "Come sit next to me, sweetheart." He extended his arms as I walked to him and hugged me tightly before releasing me.

"Hi dad. Hello everyone." I awkwardly greeted the small crowd as I sat down. I received a chorus of equally awkward hellos back.

I noticed that one of my mums oldest friends was here with her son, Harvey. He was my age and was in my year at school but he was a stuck up, spoilt little rich boy who expected every girl to fall at his feet - well not me, I'm afraid.

Oh god, this is going to be a long night. I sighed, faking an interest in whatever it they were talking about, as I sat back in my seat.

                                              ............................................

"So, Katherine, why did you break up with your boyfriend?" Harvey questioned as we were eating. I looked at him, shocked - what made him think he could ask that?

"It's Kate. And no offence, but I really don't think that's any of your business."

"Well. I was just making polite conversation." he sniffed, nose obviously put out of joint. A few hours later, I had managed to dodge Harvey's various flirting attempts, much to mum's dismay. I somehow managed to block out the rest of the night, much to my relief. Before I knew it, it was 11.56pm and everyone had just left.

"Well, that was lovely. Wasn't it, darling?" Mum asked as I picked up my bag. I was struggling to awnser diplomatically, knowing being honest would upset mum.

"It was lovely seeing you again." I smiled, trying to avoid the question. It must have been fairly convincing as she hugged me tightly.

"Come on, let's see you out." I still had the fake smile on my face as I said goodbye to dad who was still on the doorstep.

He'd promised that we'd meet for lunch again soon and to be honest, it did sound nice. With a more genuine smile, we said our goodbyes and I was, thankfully, at home sooner than I realised what was happening.
