There are many versions of Alfred's origin. But here is one of them
Alfred was a retired intelligence agent who followed the deathbed wish of his dying father Jarvis, to carry on the tradition of serving the Wayne Family. He introduced himself to Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson and insisted on becoming their butler. The duo didn't want one, because they didn't want to jeopardize their secret, but they decided to accept Alfred. Alfred awoke to a strange sound and followed the sound to a secret door, which was the entrance to the Batcave (Bruce Wayne was injured, that was what the noise was). Bruce was really injured and Alfred healed him up.
This is one of the many origins of Alfred Pennyworth.
