It was a dark and stormy evening. Bernard sat in his living room and watched the news on TV. Several farmers had reported cows inexplicably disappearing. Bernard marveled at this. Suddenly he was seized by a hideous thought that made him gasp.

Earlier the same week he rode home from work on his foldable bicycle from the Swedish hardware shop Clas Ohlson. The weather was attuned to his mood; the sun shone on his face and the wind blew through the hair he was not lucky enough to have. Then he had out of a sudden seen something strange in the corn fields. Two green creatures stood beside an unusually small vessel which seemed to have crashed into a decapitated scarecrow; a head made out of a hollow pumpkin with some straw for hair laid a couple of meters away. Sunlight reflected from the top of the ship that consisted of silver foil. Smoke emerged from something Bernard thought looked like an engine which a third green creature was standing on it.

Had  you or I seen this we would surely have begun to wonder, but Bernard simply  waved at one of the green men with disproportionately large heads. He assumed that they were three of his colleagues from NASA who had the tendency to dress up in costumes inspired by space creatures and eagerly attended all sci-fi  conventions.

When Bernard's mind was brought back into the living room he felt chills creeping down his spine. He thought he could recall a faint "moo" coming from the rear of the silver vessel.

"Ding-dong!" the door bell rang in an ironic, characteristic fashion.

The chime of the door bell roused Bernard from the alien daze, and he jumped off the couch to open it. He saw no one outside; but as he was about to shut the door behind him he saw a large silver  flying saucer land in the garden, and three green aliens wandered out  of the ship.

"Gasp!" Bernard quickly jumped up from his bed. The floor felt icy cold under his feet. Bernard could still feel the gaze of the huge, entirely black eyes belonging to the alien who blasted him with laser guns beyond our own technology. He trembled at the thought and sweat was dripping from his forehead  despite the fact that the nightmare had scared all the heat out of his body.

Later, when it was finally daytime, Bernard rode on his bike to work. He was a brilliant astronomer who worked at NASA. He was particularly interested in stars, galaxies, black holes and extraterrestrial life. Bernard saluted his colleagues before he went to the office and sat down to work.

"So," he thought "in what way can I best exceed Einstein today?"

Bernard saw something shiny and glossy approach his office window with an increasing speed. "Lord Jemini!" Bernard exclaimed as the UFO broke through the wall and crushed the ceiling, sending  gleaming shards of glass from the window rushing through the office. The UFO stopped and hovered 7 meters over Bernards head. It produced a cylindrical green beam that pulled Bernard up through the air and into the flying vessel, defying Newton's law of gravitation in the process, and sped off.

The UFO was moving at a speed of 100 million kilometers per hour and was now far beyond our atmosphere. But then the spaceship abruptly stopped. Bernard lifted his eyes which was met by the harsh gaze of the three aliens he had seen earlier. In the middle stood the leader. He had his arms crossed and stomped his foot impatiently. The space ship didn't seem big from the outside, but on the inside it was absolutely gigantic. One wall was covered in levers, wires and switches; including a big red button that you get an irresistable urge to push even though you just know that something bad is going to happen. On the other side was the cockpit.

"Earth calls!" said the alien leader. Did he notice they were in outer space?

Bernard quickly jumped to his feet. "What have I done? Why have you kidnapped me? " Bernard asked hysterically. The aliens had large heads which could easily be mistaken for an awkward result of a very strong allergy. "Do not play dumb, Earthling!" the alien yelled, "you know very well what we're talking about!"

"No," he replied weakly, "I have no idea!"

"What about your research on extraterrestrial life? We do not like you dastardly earthlings meddling in our affairs!" The alien to the right was beginning to get angry and waved a fist towards Bernard.

But then, completely unexpectedly, the fourth musketeer appeared! He was an alien with a geeky shirt wearing suspenders ensuring his throusers would never fall one millimeter below the waist.

"d'Artailian!" the leader called, "you're not welcome here!"

"Let him free!" d'Artailian shouted as he pointed at the three evil aliens with a super-galactic laser cannon. They gasped in unison. D'Artailian did a somersault and advanced like a ninja towards Bernard and led him to the emergency escape capsule.

"Traitor!" the leader of the aliens shouted "by releasing Earthling you're breaking the law which states to keep all intergalactical beings considered a threat to our species imprisoned!"

D'Artailian snorted with laughter "I only follow the laws of  physics!" Thus he activated the escape capsule, and headed towards Earth with Bernard.

Finally, they arrived on the blue-green planet; Bernards kissed the ground of his the Earth, his home. He happened to swallow a beetle, but he didn't care; he was home!

"See you later!"

Bernard got up and spit out the beetle. It spun around in circles before quickly dashing away. His alien  friend was dressed in a red hawaii shirt with a white floral pattern,  blue bermuda shorts, a giant straw hat (an attempt to get his  disproportionately large to head look smaller) and stylish Ray-Ban  sunglasses. He looked like he was taken straight out of an airline advertisement.

"Where are you going?" Bernard asked. "How can I thank you?"

"My friend- that's not necessary! But if you're ever going to Barcelona- stop by for a visit! "And then he sped away in a taxi. A note with his new address blew through the air. Bernard it grabbed and put in his pocket.

The first thing Bernard did when he came home was to call his boss and quit his job. He proceeded to pack everything he owned, and set off on a flight to Barcelona to see his new friend; like he would risk being abducted by aliens again!
