"Rivera," the clerk said my name like it was poison. I sigh and walk up to her and receive my high schoolapplication.
My name is Rivera, I don't have a last name, and that high school application I received would change my life forever.
The reason why I don't have a last name is because I don't know who my parents are. I've been stuck in the Aurora Orphanage for as long as I can remember. I'm 17 and about to start high school. I sit near the base of my bunk bed and start looking over the packet I was handed. In Aurora, they put all girls in one room, and all the boys in another. I'm the eldest so I was the boss around here. "Rivera!" I look up and see Hailey smiling at me. Hailey is like a little sister to me; she's six years old. I smile at her and she walks away, probably because I'm preoccupied already. I open theenvelope I was given and pull out the documents inside. I hits me right away that the writing is not in English. 'Wow, I haven't seen Japanese writing in awhile,' I think to myself as I read the documents. 'Ouran Academy eh, I'd like to go there, then I could get out of this place.' I look around the small room and start filling out the application and test to get a scholarship because there is no way this orphanage could afford it.
It took me no time at all tofill out the application I was handed, and the test was super easy too. Anyway, I walk up to the clerk that had given me the application. She says I'll get a response in a couple of days. I nodded and walked out of the room keeping a straight face. But, when I was out of the room I couldn't help dancing a bit. I hear giggles nearby and I see that some of the smaller boys had seen me. Soon, I'm chasing them around as they're screaming their heads off while giggling.
~A couple hours later~
My manager called me over and Ienter his office. He says, his chair back facing me, "I heard you got a high school application," I say, "Yes, in fact, I did." He says, "Which school?" I say, "Ouran Academy," he deadpans, "Never heard of it." I say, "It's a school in Japan," he turns his chair so I can see his face. He has stubbles all over his chin from his horrible attempt at shaving, he's slouched in the chair, an unlit cigarette hanging from his mouth probably too lazy to light it. He says, not amused, "Could you even read the damn thing," I nod and say, "My mom, or somebody had taught me Japanese somewhere." He sighs and says, "Alright, you're going to Japan for high school because it could increase your popularity. But, if I receive one complaint, you're coming back here." I nodded, this risk was a risk worth taking.
