I sighed aggravated, walking behind my friend, the weird kid who ate paste kept stepping on the back of my shoes, making me trip with every other step. I turned around, glaring at the boy with short red hair and grey eyes. "Stop that or I'll make you wish you never had feet to step with." I whispered harshly and turned around satisfied that my next few steps were left without a fall. When we got to lunch I sat down and watched as Kellie ran to the line.
I pulled out the left overs I found in the fridge last night and ate them quietly. Kellie came back and sat across from me along with my other friend from class 312. Her name is Camille, I love going to her house. It seems like her family is the only one with a decent lifestyle. "Hi Cam, guess what I decided." Kellie said biting into a slice of pizza, I should have eaten school lunch. "What? You didn't accidentally eat another firefly, I told you Keane was lying to you." she said shaking her head.
Kellie shook her head vigorously and said, with a mouth still full of pizza, "No, he can't trick me again. I just thought of what I want my story to be about!" she looked between us expectantly, "Aren't you gonna ask what it is?" she said downcast, "I'm writing about a mom and dad and little girl and boy who live in a giant castle and have these pet dragons and go on adventures with other kingdoms!" she smiled staring dreamily into space.
Cam laughed and said, "Yeah and the dragons can talk and one of the adventures could be like all the dragons turn into something else and need help turning back!" Kellie made a dragon noise and laughed, causing us to laugh too. That was it, we spent lunch and recess acting like dragons chasing each other and laughing until classes started again.
When school ended I looked out checking for my father, though he should be at work now. He's a barber at my aunts salon, Bad Hair Day. She was the only one that would hire him since his outburst and crazy antics. I didn't see him when I walked out, him didn't come bustling down streets towards me on my way home and I heard no yelling when I settled in my room. I suppose he was at work today.
I sat on my bed and pulled out the book, skimming over the first few pages I got bored and started doing my homework. As hard as I tried I couldn't help but think over this morning. How did I do that. In all the movies I've watched and books I've read no one was able to have two powers that aren't hand in hand. How would healing and teleportation go together. Before I knew it hours had passed and I was half way through the book. Though it did give me insight on the mind and esp, it failed to help me understand myself. As I turned to the next page I heard my father walk through the house.
He didn't sound angry, he wasn't stomping and yelling, I could only assume he was in the right state of mind. I could only hope he was in the right state of mind, I ran down the stairs quietly. Peeking over the rail to my papa, he was smiling away and walking to the kitchen. I closed my eyes prepared to hear an irate sound come from him. I was certain he would be beckoning me to clean even though it wasn't all too bad.
Instead he simply let out a chuckle, sighing, and took his coat off. "Hey there Randy girl, how about I order a pizza? You know I can't cook much and I'm not in the mood for hot dogs." he said looking towards my head, barely showing over the rail. I looked at him again and started down the stairs. As I got near him I smelled something off, something different. I could only guess that for once he hadn't been drinking today.
I nodded my head slightly, still dazed over the fact that he wasn't agitated by the dishes. He wasn't drunk and seemed to be sober since this morning. The thought of what could have happened early made my heart wrench and my face look sour. He noticed it and almost instantly thought of the same thing. He looked down at my in pity and turned serious. "Look Miranda, I apologize for this morning. You know how I can get sometimes, I'm trying to get better you know this." He appeared to have been rambling again.
I smiled up at him, as best I could, and replied, "It's alright papa, I understand and I accept your apology." I wasn't sure it were a lie or not but it stopped him from continuing. He walked away, pulling out his phone and dialing Pizza Hut. I started washing the dishes, just to be sure for later. After I finished the pizza was here and we ate silently. Sometime later I found myself back in my room reading once more. Enticed by the book I stayed up all night and finished, though I can't really say the same about my homework.
Before I left for school I finished the easier things, and packed the rest of the chicken in a freezer bag. I looked outside and it seemed bad out there so I turned on the news checking the weather. The first thing it turned to was of a middles school somewhat farther down the street. There stood a row of police and SWAT teams. I stared in awe as they clicked to footage of what appeared to be a brown haired girl floating with lightening zapping from her body and things flying about. It was almost as if she was magic.
Like she was like me, but different. I wonder if there were more people like me out there. Going back to the screen I heard the woman saying all schools nearby have been closed, it appears the girl had ran out and escaped. To where I had no idea. So I have no school and nothing to do all day. I sat watching the t.v. until I heard my father waking up and trudging down the stairs.
Astonishing he didn't drink once yesterday, something good must have happened. I turned smiling to him as nice as I could. He simply stared at me smirking, teasingly. As if he knew something I didn't, as if he held the secret to the world. Walking towards me his smirk got wider, and he began to chuckle. "Miranda, did you enjoy dinner last night?" He asked taking a seat on the couch. I nodded, my smile starting to drift away. Something was coming, something bad, or maybe I would just ave to go without eating for another week.
"Good good." he mumbled looking off towards no where, deep in thought. He stood up with a grunt and glared at me disgusted. "Why aren't you in school today?" he looked outside, "It ain't that bad out there. I'm not driving you." he said shuffling past me. "There's no school, apparently a girl at the middle school had caused some sort of catastrophic mess." I replied shrugging. He then started watching the news after I said it. After a few minutes he stared in utter shock and fear. Shaking, uncontrollably, he backed away and called someone.
I didn't hear much of what he said but when he came back he was smiling like an lunatic. Like he had finally solved the unsolvable, maybe he did. I'd watched him go on for minutes, rambling to himself and pacing back and forth. I'd gotten so bored with it that I had started rereading my book. With in the next hour or so there was a news network outside of my house.
Papa jumped up excitedly and quickly shoved on a pair of shoes and his coat. He ran out the door to greet them, and judging by their faces they weren't too thrilled. I stared from the kitchen, where I started cleaning, as people had filed in and were setting something up. What on earth was my father doing?
