Chapter 5: The Truth

"What are you talking about Lance? What door?" Rachel asked in concern. I sighed and showed her the key. Nick watched in silence. "Where did you get that?" Rachel asked. I sighed once again, "You won't believe me this time..." I said looking down. Rachel came up to me and held my cheek. "You can tell me anything Lance." She said, staring into my eyes. I nod, "I was walking through an alley and it felt like I had no control over my body at first, then the ground turned into a black void....and I fell inside of it....and I was in a room full of doors then I found this key..." I held it out to her. She examined the key silently. " So....you got this from this void?" Rachel asked. I nodded remaining silent. I glanced over at Nicholas, who was shaking as he stood next to Rachel. "Nick? Whats wrong?" I asked. "I um....I saw that k-key before." He stuttered and continued to shake. I stood up staring at him, "what...did you say..?" I asked. He stood there, staring into my eyes, "I've been to that void.......I was chased down by the most horrible thing I could ever imagine..." His voice became shaky. "Then you can help me Nick......we can figure this out together, we can find what's behind that door." I said. I felt relieved knowing that I wasn't alone in this. "No.....I refuse to go back.....I can't face tha-that thing again." Nicholas said shaking even more. "Nick....we can do this together. I believe that we can. I finally found someone who's like me. Together, we can figure out how to help people." I said holding Nick's shoulder. Nicholas sighed and nodded. "You're right....and maybe the dreams will stop. Maybe all of this will end." Nicholas smiled softly. I smile back at him, preparing myself for the next few days....or even weeks. "Well....then I'll help too." Rachel spoke up. "Lance....I see you as family, I can't let you two do this alone, what if one of you get hurt? All three of us are going to help each other." She said proudly. "Hmm maybe but, how would we get all three of us inside the void when only two of us are capable of entering?" I asked looking at both Nick and Rachel. "Maybe by physical contact. When I found you passed out in the alley, I saw another person walk over to you and touch your shoulder. Then once they vanished, I realized that person was me and I walked over and touched you and you stopped mumbling and convulsing." Nick said looking at them both. I was puzzled by his words, 'does that mean he has a different ability than I do?' I thought to myself
"Alright well then let's find out what this key unlocks, this is gonna be one hell of a week." Rachel said chuckling. I smile softly, 'am I ready for this?..'. -later-
Its approaching midnight and we all are still up, coming up with ways to find out what this key is. I got tired and decided to just lay down in my bed for a couple of minutes, afraid of getting another nightmare or worse, getting pulled back into that void again when they aren't aware. I lay down staring at the ceiling, trapped in my thoughts. I hear Rachel walking to her room, I guess she's going to bed. I told Nicholas that he can stay in my room if he wants to, he seemed really happy to help us. I look over to notice Nicholas had walked in my room and laid on the sofa that was in front of the TV. I watch him silently. He looked peaceful and relaxed.....I really want to ask him more about his ability seeing how ours vary from each other more than I thought it did. I decided to go to sleep, well, at least try to go to sleep. 'I really hope its not another nightmare...' I say to myself before falling asleep

G-go where?...
To hell...
I gasp loudly sitting up in my bed, panting. I look around the room in a panic checking to see if I was still in the apartment. I sigh laying back down slowly. I look up at my ceiling resting my hand on my forehead. As I calmed down I noticed a faint noise from the other side of my room. I turned my head in the direction of the noise. Nicholas was.....crying. "Nick?" I said softly but it was clearly heard since the crying stopped. "Nick?.....what's wrong?" I sat up in bed taking a better look at him. He in fetal position, trembling violently. A part of me felt bad for him. "Come here Nick..." I said softly he slowly crawled over to my bed and laid next to me. "Talk to me...." I whispered. He didn't look at me, all he did was snuggle into my chest and stayed quiet. I held him with out saying a word. "They're t-trying to hurt you...." He mumbled. I stared at him "who?" I asked whispering to him. "The shadows..." That was the only thing he said before he fell back to sleep. I was utterly confused. What shadows? Are they like the voices? Why do they want to hurt me?... Obviously I can't answer these questions myself. I look down at Nicholas..... I sigh and close my eyes. I fell asleep once more with only one thing on my mind....
'Why did it choose us?.....'
