Nineteen

"I hope you two don't mind, but... we're gonna have to highjack a car." Jack said hesitantly. We had found our way out of the forest easily, turns out we were only about two miles South of the backroad we originally got stranded on, and we also found our car had been towed. Perfect.

We were now entering the small town seven miles North of the forest, the one Larry had offered to drive us to, and it felt so good to be around civilization. I felt safer. I rolled my eyes, dodging a pothole.

"Yeah, Jack, after everything, I'm going to argue with you about a car." I joked, looking around, taking in the small, crummy downtown area. There was a rundown gas station to my right, First State Bank to my left, and a long strip of tiny shops, no doubt a pathetic attempt of a tourist attraction.

There was another group of four or five teenagers walking down the sidewalk on the opposite side of the street, all giving us weird stares. Probably because Jack was shirtless, and we all looked disastrous, due to the fact that we had been sleeping on the ground, running like crazy, and hadn't showered since the hotel.

I didn't like the way they looked at us. Like we weren't good enough for their stupid little town. I glared back harder, at one girl in particular, who was glowering directly at me. She was chunky, tall, maybe eighteen, with short brown hair and tattoos all up and down her arms. She was wearing a white tank top that was way too tight for her, and camouflage capris.

She just lit a cigarette, sticking it in her mouth and giving me the finger. I ignored it, turning my gaze forward.

"What was that about?" Sydney muttered from behind me.

"Punks think they own the whole town." I chuckled dryly, continuing to walk towards the shops.

"Yo!" we heard being called from behind us. We all turned to see the teenagers coming towards us. I have to say, they all looked badass and pretty intimidating.

"Um, can I help you?" Jack asked, completely oblivious to the situation.

"No. I think that's my question. You gotta problem with us?" I realized now it was a tall, lean guy speaking, hat on backwards, pants hangin' down, cigarette smoke blowing out of his mouth.

"No, no problem." Jack said confused.

"I think you was givin' us some dirty looks." he went up to Jack, getting up in his face.

"Hey, look, I've never seen you before in my life,"

"Did I tell you to speak?"

"Dude, look, I'm don't want any trouble!" Jack insisted. The tall guy glared at Jack for a long moment.

"What the hell you doin' here?" he asked. Jack debated.

"Okay, look, we need a car. Really bad. And we don't have any cash."

"Well, maybe if you tell me where is it you need to go, I could help you out."

"South Carolina." Jack said without hesitation. The tall guy peered back at me and Syd, scanning both of us from head to toe.

"First of all, how'd you score these two fine ass women?" he asked, smirking. Jacks fists clenched, and he spoke through his teeth.

"The one on the left is my girlfriend, bub, so watch it."
