In the Marauders' earlier days, the animagi would sometimes forget to turn back into people. This frightened Remus to no end because he didn't want them to become content with being animals and leave him forever. He would remind them that they're human just as much as they had to remind him that he was. I imagine he felt a bit left out from time to time because they could control their animal form and he couldn't.
