Jade Mitchell

Monday... I've always hated Monday. Even if it was a Monday in the middle of the summer. I swiped through the days in my phone's calender as I counted how many there were until the first day of school. I would be starting all over. Starting "fresh" as my mom would say.

I was currently in the backseat of mom and Jesse's black BMW as we continued to drive out into the middle of nowhere. I wanted to go back, I wanted to turn around so bad. Knowing that I was leaving the place I grew up was heart wrenching.

"It won't be that bad Jade, you'll love it." Jesse said as if he were reading my mind. I wanted to smile, but I was too wrapped up in my own sad thoughts.

I met Jesse when I was just 7 years old. He was introduced to me as a friend of mom's, but soon he became the closest thing to a father figure I've ever had my whole life.

After my father walked out on me a few years ago, my mom and Jesse began to date, and eventually later on down the road they got married.

I loved Jesse like he was my dad, he practically was. He's the best thing that has ever happened to my mom and I have much respect for him.

Although, I still talk to my biological father. Maybe a phone call here and there. We're not close at all though- I just want to know what I did so wrong that made him want to abandon me.

We pulled up to a rather large house with a lot of windows. It was very nice.

"Well, this is it." Mom said, looking back at me smiling.

I stepped out of the car and let my eyes shut tightly as I stretched my body.

"Should we say it now?" Jesse whispered to mom.

"Say what?"

The both of their mouthes turned up at the corners revealing a grin. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion.

"Go look in the backyard."

I narrowed my eyes at them, then continued to do as they said. I walked up the long driveway and around the house, my jaw dropped at the sight.

There was a beach in the backyard, it was a beach house. I started squealing and jumping up and down like a little kid. Who would've though this would all turn around in my favor?

"Do you like it?" Jesse smiled as he came up next to me.

"I love it."

Later on that day I didn't waste anytime unpacking all of my things. I needed everything to be organized and it's place as soon as possible.

So far, everything has been going well. I love the house, my room, and the beach is my favorite part. Jesse picked it out, I know he did.

After unpacking my last box, I headed into the kitchen for a glass of water. I stopped and took a look out of the window when I saw a guy and a girl sitting on the sand. They looked like they were having a conversation, so I went about my business.

As I drank my glass of water, I noticed the girl smiling in my direction and waving for me to come outside. Trying to be polite as possible, I put the cup down and did as she wanted.

"Hey." I waved.

"Man, you're so lucky to live here." The girl said getting up from the sand. She dusted herself off and helped the guy who was sitting up as well.

"I'm Alina, and that's Lucas." She smiled. Lucas gave me a quick head nod as he continued to look around and up at the sky.

"So where did you move from?" She asked.

"Harlem."

"Wow, really? I've always wanted to go to New York. How is it?"

"Busy." I chuckled. As I tried to listen to Alina ramble on about God knows what, I noticed a boy coming out from his backyard and onto the sand. He laid a towel down before he sat, and he had a comic book tight in his hand.

"Who is that?" I questioned. Lucas looked at me, and Alina had stopped talking.

"Ew, Christopher? The murderer?" She said in a small voice.

I furrowed my eyebrows. "Murderer? What do you mean murderer?"

"He killed one of our friends last year, it was ruled as self defense but I think that's a load of shit." Lucas scoffed.

"The whole town thinks he's a total lunatic." Alina added.

"And his mom doesn't let him go anywhere."

"Not to mention how much of a whore she is. I wouldn't be surprised if she slept with every god damn man in this town. And she's a stripper." Alina informed.

They were talking as if Christopher wasn't sitting almost 40 feet away from us. It was obvious he heard what they were saying because he snatched his towel off the sand and made his way right back into the house.

"Where's his dad?" I questioned.

"He doesn't have one."

I kissed my teeth and shook my head. That hit home.

I could definitely notice the hostility Alina and Lucas had towards Christopher. It was in their tone of voice, and the way they spoke about him.

I didn't know him but besides the fact that he killed somebody, he seemed interesting. And I was never the one to judge anybody.
