Chapter Two.

Alone, anxious and completely grief struck; those where the emotions coursing through Eva's veins as she sat in the cushioned hospital chair. She had been waiting for hours for any update on Julia's condition but no one had attended to her; she didn’t take that to heart though. She'd preferred if the nurses and doctors worked hard to keep her mother to stay alive. Eva couldn't bear the thought of losing her mother and having to face this world alone. Even tough her mother annoyed her and didn't exactly play her role exactly, she did love her. There wasn't anyone near to look after her or be a temporary guardian since they left all family behind in America when they moved to England. No one ever visited.

Eva shook as her efforts to forget the whole scene failed miserably. The picture of Julia falling from her gunshot wound in slow motion played in her mind making tears fall again down her cheeks. It was too much for Eva to bear. It was the sort of thing you only saw on CSI or another show, it didn’t feel as though it could happen in real life. Fate decided to turn it into a reality for the Eva and Julia. She began to shake violently and uncontrollably until a warm reassuring hand laid on her shoulder, snapping her out if her state of frustration.

She looked up and saw the face of Julia's doctor, Doctor Monroe, with a clip board in hand. He smiled warmly at Eva as she bolted up to face him properly. "H-h-how is she?”

"Well, we managed to remove the bullet and she's attached to some life support machine's to help her breath and to feed her," he replied. All the worry from the nights events were heavy on Eva's shoulders and hearing the news made it all go away. Her mother was okay.

"But..." with that single word the weight came back. “The bullet was difficult to remove; I'd never seen one like it before. It wasn't just a bullet, it held around five smaller ones inside. It dispatched all around her body targeting her organs. Luckily, the biggest one missed her heart but it hit all the other organs. She'll need to stay under our care for a while."

"How long is a while exactly?" Eva asked.

"Three to four months. She needs to heal and even then she’ll have to stay at home for a long time. This is really serious and I don’t think someone so young and probably close to her exams should be worrying about this. Let us look after your mum. Maybe you should head home. It's edging three in the morning." Eva nodded and shook the doctor’s hand. He was right, she should go and get some rest but she wasn’t sure she would be able to get to sleep anyway.

“Thank you,” with that, Eva made her way to the front desk to check the visiting hours. She wasn’t even meant to stay in the hospital so late as when they arrived visiting hours where done but Eva was reluctant to leave.

Eva left the hospital into the dead of night where she called a taxi to take her home. It was a restless night alone.

For the rest of the weekend Eva stayed with her mother. Once Julia came out of the theatre, she spent time in recovery. It hurt Eva to see that her mother couldn’t do anything for herself-eat, go toilet or anything else. She could only sit and watch her sleep. As much as she hated her mum sometimes for not understanding her different interests, she still felt sorry for her. The visits were silent as Julia was almost unresponsive leaving Eva to think for the hours she spent. She thought it was her fault. If Eva had done more to stop her mum getting those cigarettes, then she wouldn’t have been shot. It would have been Eva. In her mind she believed that she couldn’t survive without Julia, though Julia could survive without her. Tears had never come to Eva often. She was incredible strong and could control her emotions. She only cried on the rare occasion when she was in pain. She cried more then she ever had before.
