Chapter 44: Kisses?

Start from the beginning

“I guess so,” I yawned again, opening my eyes. “Now what was that about making it interesting?”

“Well, I was thinking…” he said slowly, trailing off as he ripped a paper out of his binder and grabbing a pencil.

He wrote something quickly and pushed the paper to me. My eyes scanned the paper and I glared at him tiredly.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” I hissed.

He just smirked at me.

I sat up shaking my head, “Nuh uh.”

“Why not?” he pouted.

“I told you already; I can’t do it. And I won’t do it. I’ll audition but I won’t do that.” I said, glaring.

He sighed, “But you’re going to get the part so why are you worrying about it so much? Besides, I didn’t specify where I just specified the what.” He said.

“Tell me more,” I said sarcastically.

“Well, I said you have to give me…” he paused and tapped the paper with his finger so Kayla and Matt wouldn’t overhear, but they were far too distracted with their own project to notice us. “But you can do it wherever you want.” He shrugged.

“Isn’t that kind of what we do already?” I asked, leaning my head on my arms again.

He grinned, “Kind of.”

I sighed, “Fine. But we’re not shaking on it since we’re in class.”

He rolled his eyes at me but didn’t say anything else as I closed my eyes.

“Did you get any sleep this weekend?” Austin hissed under his breath after a moment.

I shrugged; I had slept, but only for an hour or so over the course of the weekend.

“This can’t go on, you need sleep. How are you supposed to defend yourself if something happens, if you can barely keep your eyes open?” he asked, a touch irritated.

My eyes flashed open and I saw him glaring at me with his wide silver eyes. I frowned.

“It’s not like I force myself not to sleep. I just can’t.” I said, my voice turning a touch cold.

We glared at each other for a moment before he turned his head away and sighed. “I’m sorry,” he said quietly, still not looking at me.

“Yeah, what ever,” I muttered, closing my eyes.

“Alright, Carmen. Whenever you’re ready.” One of the music teachers called.

I was standing on the stage in the auditorium on Tuesday during lunch while all the teachers who were taking care of the Christmas Show were sitting and watching as people auditioned. There were even some students who managed to sneak in.

I took a deep breath before I started to sing.

“Keep holding on ‘cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through. Just stay strong ‘cause you know I'm here for you, I'm here for you. There's nothing you could say, nothing you could do. There's no other way when it comes to the truth. So keep holding on ‘cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through.” I sang the chorus of Keep Holding On before continuing on. I sang from deep inside of me, projecting my voice loudly around the large auditorium but did it in a way that it didn’t sound like I was screaming.

“So far away I wish you were here. Before it's too late, this could all disappear. Before the doors close and it comes to an end with you by my side I will fight and defend. I'll fight and defend, yeah, yeah.” I sang just as one of the teachers stood up.

“Alright, that’s enough.” The teacher said, and I gnawed on my busted lower lip.

“That was very good. We’ll post the results on Thursday on the bulletin board, okay?” she smiled at me.

I smiled back with a nod before I scurried off the stage. I had seen Alex in the crowd, nodding his head along to my singing with a smile on his face and I wondered vaguely why he didn’t look like he wanted to kill me.

I made a mental note to ask Austin about Alex one day as I hurried out of the auditorium.

I caught a familiar face on my way out. Austin was standing at the back of the auditorium, in the shadows, but he stepped out as I passed.

“I’m looking forward to my kiss,” he whispered with a smirk.

I snorted as quietly as I could since there was another audition going on, “In that case, I hope I get the part,” I smirked pushing open the door and leaving while Austin pouted at me.

The improved deal was simple; if I audition and I get the part then Austin will do anything I ask. If I audition and lose, I have to give him a kiss wherever I choose but it has to be for at least five minutes.

I walked away, exhaling in relief to finally be out of the auditorium. I cursed Austin and our deal in my head as I hurried to the cafeteria to eat. All the while I kept thinking about our deal and the maybe kiss hanging over my head that our deal had brought up.
