Chapter One : Gunshots in the Woods

Laedi's Point of View

I aimed the arrow towards the marked target on the bark of the old willow tree, taking a few deep breaths while I'm at it. I know that usually people use crossbows or something else fancier but I always preferred a bow and arrow. But I was always a fast shot, though, almost as fast as a crossbow. The twigs felt rough to my touch, prickling my skin. I drew the string back, slightly pressing it on my cheek before releasing.

It landed perfectly on the target, the silver arrow's tip digging into the heavy wood. I waltzed up towards it before grasping the base in my hand and pulling it out, slipping it into my quiver.

Leaves broke into pieces a few feet away; my head snapping towards the sound. It was someone, I thought. Or something. I pulled my gun out; yeah I know it would probably attract more of those things but I've installed a silencer, try and guess what that does. I clicked the safety off, dashing towards the cave and hiding in the shadows. 3 pairs of footsteps drew near. Me - being the curious person I am - bobbed my head outwards a bit, catching a glance of the trespassers. It was pretty obvious that they weren't one of those creatures - since they weren't wheezing or moaning like them.

A man that looked a little bit like a sheriff held a silver pistol in his hands, a little bit similar to mine. Another man held a crossbow in is grip, a little look of mischief in his expression. And lastly, a woman with black hair and a samurai blade slinging down her back. I eyed them suspiciously, don't you think it's a bit weird that people actually make it this far? They were the first innocent bunch of people I've ever seen for the past 3 years; well, just take of the gun, the blade and the crossbow and they'll come off as innocent. But still, that doesn't mean that they might not be infected or bit.

They were practically bathed in blood, but hey, I wasn't looking so blood-free either.

I hesitantly pulled the gun from my belt loop, aiming it at the sheriff's back. I took a deep breath, exhaling before finally pulling the trigger. "Rick, watch out!" the guy with the crossbow yelled, pulling his friend - Rick, I presume - towards him while my bullet hit a branch. Rick pulled out his own gun, releasing three shots going my direction. I dodged them easily, but one seemed to get caught in my upper arm. "Shoot." I muttered coldly as the blood slowly oozed out. "Who are you?!" Rick hollered, hos voice sounding strong. "You should really get a silencer, you idiot!" I screamed back at him, ripping a strand of cloth from my blanket and and desperately tied it around my arm.

"I said, who are you?!" he ignored me, flicking the safety off from his gun. His voice sounded faint while the moans from the distance boomed in my ears, sending my heart thumping loudly. "Dammit." I said, grabbing my prepacked bag - just in case I needed to escape sooner - and circled it around my right shoulder before grabbing the blanket and stuffing it in as well. It held all the food I needed along with my clothes and all my guns. I ran out, seeing a look of surprise come over all their faces.

The moaning grew louder.

"But, you're just a kid." Rick said, a wonder struck tone covering his voice. "Yeah. But we don't really have time for a get-to-know-me, buddy. You either go with me and go back to wherever camp you came from, 'cause those jerks are gonna be here any minute." they still seemed awestruck at what I said, but once they saw my bleeding arm I knew they understood. They followed me to the back, letting me pull off the cover of my Toyota. I stepped into the driver's seat, shoving the keys into the ignition as the engine burst to life. I revved it while the first 'thing' collided to the ground to give me room to drive away.

"Where's your camp?" I gritted my teeth, the blood dropping onto my jeans.

"Take a left from here." a woman's voice called out.

I swerved to the left, bumping into a few of those monsters on the way. My vision blurred with black dots, but I kept my eyes on the road, stomping on the grass while the groans slowly faded in the distance.

*1 Hour Later*

We've come across some weird prison somehow; its walls glistening with cement while barb wire hung loosely from the steel gates that protected the concrete building. Those things surrounded it, but I was more afraid of what was inside. More moans and groans echoed while some Korean guy was standing beside the gate. "Glenn! Open it up!" shouted Rick after opening his car door and waving his arms about. The guy - Glenn - fiddled to his feet and drew it open, letting us pass safely in. We were in the other part of the prison, some place 'thing'-free. I stopped the Toyota at the middle, swerving to the left and stepping on the brake as the car screeched to a halt.

My arm was throbbing, pain pounding through my veins while I jammed the car door open. I sunk to the ground, my legs feeling like jelly beneath me. "Hershel!" a scruffy voice called out.

"Who's this?" asked an elderly voice. "We found her in the woods. She tried to shoot me but I got to her first." Rick explained while I wheezed and coughed; trying to breathe the best I can. "Let's get her inside." responded the unknown voice while two people gripped around my arms and carried me away like I was a guilty prisoner sent here to rot; my knees scraped the ground while silence filled the air around us, eyes all on me. The twist and churn in my stomach that screamed of pain was the only feeling I had before I completely blacked out.
