Running. It seems that’s all she did these days.

Her old life was just slowing crumbling, and she was just forced to watch it. She was the awkward kid at school, the one with the big square glasses and actually enjoyed reading. Getting bullied constantly she tried to show no emotion, but no one can stay strong for too long.

Home wasn’t much better. Her mother trudged in the house at a late hour, drunk as always. She would sling her arm over her shoulder as she made sure she at least got to her bedroom before she passed out.

But her life couldn’t continue like this, with no authority looking over her. But one day, she couldn’t handle of all it. The authorities came while she was at school, seeing her mother passed out from the alcohol. She came home that day, the authorities scattered across her house and her mother gone. She gulped, and her heart ached in pain knowing she would never see the only family she had.

As the authorities explained she would be going to a temporary orphanage before getting adopted, she tried to act distraught. Like a normal child would act in a situation like this. But little did they know that this 16 year old was all out of patience in this life. With no family left in the small town of Broomingsfield, there was nothing holding her back from the dream of running away.

So that’s what she did. When they told her to pack her stuff, she did. But little did they know she was not heading to their destination. Instead, she climbed down the old oak tree beside her window. She threw her suitcase to the ground as she climbed down. She paused at the last branch though, seeing as it was a little far from the ground. Nether less, she jumped and winced at the pain she felt in her ankle.

Luckily, it was just stunned for a moment, but she limped when she jogged over to the woods. The woods in the back of her house were well-known to her, as she played in them as a child. That was when she was an innocent little girl, unknown to the cruel society growing around her. Her father was alive then, with his booming laughter to cheer up the whole family. Her mother had a job back then, pleased to be living the dream life. What more could she want then with her beautiful daughter and loving husband? Too bad that perfect fantasy didn’t last forever.

The first week on her own was the hardest. It was when the people were looking for her; she was even the headline of the local news. So she stayed hiding in the beloved woods, in her secret hiding spot. Of course the woods were searched, but no one could ever think of her secret spot. It was this little tunnel in the ground, covered by leaves in the entrance. She had some snacks left over down there from when she used to come down to read. It wasn’t too bad, considering she was naturally warm from the September air.
