Chapter One
The Confidential Order

The rain had been falling over Seoul since midnight.

By dawn, the city looked washed-out and exhausted-its glass towers hidden behind grey clouds, its streets shining beneath the pale glow of traffic lights.

Han Soo-jin stood alone beside the window of a quiet office, watching the rain slide down the glass.

She had been waiting for twenty-three minutes.

Soo-jin disliked waiting.

It gave silence too much space to speak.

Behind her, the metal door opened with a soft click.

"Agent Han."

Soo-jin turned immediately.

A woman in a dark suit entered the room. She was in her late forties, composed and expressionless, with a thin black folder held firmly beneath one arm.

Shin-jin followed her inside, closing the door behind them.

Soo-jin's best friend looked unusually serious.

That alone told her the assignment was important.

The woman placed the folder on the table.

"Sit."

Soo-jin and Shin-jin took their seats.

The woman remained standing.

"You have both been selected for a confidential operation involving an international criminal syndicate,"

she said.

"The operation falls under national-security intelligence because the organization is connected to cross-border weapons, narcotics, and money-laundering networks."

Soo-jin's gaze dropped to the folder.

There was no official label on it.

No case number.

No agency seal.

That was never a good sign.

"Who is the target?" Shin-jin asked.

The woman studied them for a moment before answering.

"Jean Jungkook."

The name seemed to settle over the room like a warning.

Soo-jin opened the folder.

The first photograph showed a man standing outside a black vehicle. He wore a charcoal suit, one hand resting casually in his pocket.

His face was calm, almost emotionless, but his eyes were sharp enough to make the photograph feel uncomfortable.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, and strikingly handsome.

The second photograph showed him walking through an underground parking garage.

The third showed him entering a private club surrounded by armed men.

Soo-jin turned another page.

The file contained very little information.

No confirmed address.

No official photograph.

No record of his family.

Only a list of suspected crimes and a network of names connected to him.

"Jungkook is believed to be the head of one of the most influential criminal organizations in East Asia," the director continued.

"He controls smuggling routes, private security companies, gambling establishments, and several legitimate businesses used to conceal illegal transactions."
