"How can you make someone this wonderful and then give him that ending?"

Caelan Veyron.
The youngest son of one of the most powerful families in the empire.
Unlike the other tragic characters in the novel, Caelan hadn't grown up unloved.
He had a large family.
He had a gentle mother.
He had several older brothers who adored him.
His brothers had already married their female Masters and had children of their own.
The Veyron household was loud, warm, wealthy, and almost ridiculously affectionate.
And Caelan?
He was the youngest.
The only unmarried son.
A brilliant military general who had spent years protecting the empire.
He was supposed to return home after his latest campaign.
Instead...
He died on a lonely road.
Elina's expression darkened.
"I hate this."
She stared at the screen.
"He had a family waiting for him."
Her fingers tightened around the phone.
"His mother was waiting."
She swallowed.
"His brothers were waiting."
Her voice became quieter.
"And nobody even knew what really happened to him."
She threw the phone onto the bed.
"If I ever met the author, I would personally ask why they thought that was a good idea."
Silence.
Then-
Ding!
Elina froze.
She slowly turned her head.
A small golden screen appeared in the air.
[Ding!]
