The Trap
The morning air in Pune carried a crisp mountain chill, but inside the quiet suburban bungalow, the atmosphere was warm. Former Superintendent of Police Ananth Khandelwal sat at his modest wooden dining table, carefully pouring fresh orange juice for his eighteen-year-old daughter, Shriya.
To the outside world, Ananth was a decorated ex-cop who had taken early retirement following a bitter, agonizing divorce six years prior. To Shriya, he was simply her world. Bright, bubbly, and fiercely driven, Shriya was a first-year student pursuing her B.E. in Information Technology, carrying a brilliant future in her eyes.
Dad, I'm heading to campus early today, Shriya said, slinging her heavy backpack over her shoulder and leaning down to give him a swift hug. Senior-junior project sync before lectures.
Don't stay late, Shri. Call me the moment you're done if you need a ride, Ananth smiled, watching her sprint out the front door.
He had no way of knowing that this would be the last normal morning of his life.
At the engineering college, Shriya had recently caught the eye of an influential senior group. Among them was a charismatic, sharply dressed outsider who frequented the campus cafes introducing himself as Rakshit Malhotra. Presenting himself as a wealthy NRI entrepreneur with ventures across Europe, Rakshit showered Shriya with tailored attention, subtly isolated her from her childhood friends, and skillfully fed her romantic idealism.
Within three months, Rakshit had swept the naive teenager off her feet. Then came the trap.
He convinced her that his life was in immediate danger from ruthless rival businessmen and that they needed to elope to Delhi overnight to register their marriage before fleeing abroad together. Manipulated, terrified for his safety, and blinded by romantic devotion, Shriya locked her phone inside a campus locker and vanished into the night with him.
When Shriya failed to return home by 10:00 PM, Ananth's hard-won police instincts kicked in. His calls went straight to voicemail. By sunrise, twenty-four hours had passed with zero contact. A frantic Ananth marched straight into his former precinct, filing a formal missing person report while mobilizing a parallel, off-the-books investigation.
What Ananth did not know was that the moment the overnight express train pulled into Old Delhi station, Rakshit's suave persona dissolved completely. He stripped Shriya of her phone, wallet, passport, and dignity, delivering her directly into the hands of a human trafficking cartel operating out of the notorious alleys of GB Road.
Rakshit Malhotra wasn't a starry-eyed young entrepreneur. He was a cold-blooded trafficker who treated college campuses as his private hunting ground.
The Untouchable
For fourteen agonizing days, Ananth did not sleep.
Utilizing his vast network of former informants, cyber-cell operatives, and off-the-record enforcement squads, Ananth systematically bypassed bureaucratic red tape. On the fourteenth night, an encrypted tip-off led a heavily armed tactical unit straight into a subterranean den hidden behind a reinforced brothel door in GB Road.
