The First of Five

Start from the beginning

But first, I read. The book detailed the history of one of the material planets. It told of how on a planet far in the material plane was completely just one populated city. It was a small planet, but still- almost every space on the planet had been covered in city. Billions of people packed into the 100-story high apartment buildings. It was said to be the trade center of a galaxy.

My translation was rough, but it still stirred in me the yearning to go there. To see the rising spires of industry and the millions upon millions of just-- people. And not just humans. My translation indicated all sorts of races inhabiting that planet: Elves, Dwarfs, Eladrin, psy-beings, etc. I wished to be able to meet these types of people, and learn what they knew so I could grow even stronger.

With my dictionary in hand, I moved onto the next book that I could open. I don't know how long I spent in that house just reading. I was feeding my greed for knowledge with these books.

By the end of her library, I was able to comprehend the language of the books without a translator. I theorized that the language was elven, and the holy books had just been blessed. At that point, I had almost forgotten Lorelei, but as soon as I finished her library I was once more reminded of her.

Demonic urges are weird. I couldn't help myself as I replaced all the books and left the building. I didn't understand what I was doing, or why. Soon though, I found myself eradicating the home with demonic flames of my own. Through this, I found that I could breathe fire like dragons could.

I stood before the burning house, and howled out the sounds of music that I had learned. I purred an hummed and howled the notes that played through my mind. It was a sorrowful song-- one of mourning without remorse. I respected the angel. But I still hated angels in general.

Once the house had burned to the ground, I turned on my heels, spread my wings, and flew up into the sky. My wings were odd and unused, and I looked just as awkward no matter what. I flew to the closest realm of the abyss that I could find. I was tiring though, and it seemed that the closet realm would not be close enough. I wondered, what would happen if I just stopped flying? Would I fall for eternity, or eventually hit another layer and just-- die?

I found strangely, that between layers of the abyss there was a dry and warm wind that circulated between each realms' atmosphere. It was very different to the atmosphere of the realm that I had spent my time on so far. I rode this warm wind, like eagles do on the mortal worlds. The updrafts carried me to my destination, which from afar seemed to be just a black land of dark trees.

As I entered the atmosphere of the layer I instantly felt the air go moist with the humidity of a jungle. The trees seemed wilder and darker as I got closer. I landed on this place, and for the first fifty feet or so there was only dark, green grass. Then trees sprouted. They rose hundreds of feet over my head, and had trunks at least thirty feet in width. Their bark was black as night, and as rough as gravel. The roots of the giant trees seemed to snake over the landscape at every point possible, making fast travel almost impossible.

At least I had found other living organisms. Even if they were just trees. The trees were tainted and violated with the evil auras of the abyss, and all the demons that had passed through the areas where the trees grew.

I was afraid (or just wary) of entering the darkness beyond the trees. At least out on the grass, the ambient light of the red skies lit up the area. As soon as one entered beyond the first layer of trees though, there was nothing that I could see except for total darkness. Every now and then, if I stared intently, I would catch the glimmer or light of a pair of eyes. This sometimes made me fearful, but just as soon as they had appeared, the pairs of eyes would disappear, or fade into the blackness.
