Chapter 1

How It Went to This?

Sunday, June 28, 2038 — 2:38 A.M.

A quiet, empty alley.

The only light that reached them came from the pale moon hanging above, casting long shadows across the cold pavement.

The city that was once filled with noise had fallen completely silent. No passing cars. No distant laughter. Only the cold wind drifting through the empty streets, as if even the world itself had paused for them.

There, beneath the silence of the night, Scalia and Rhone held each other as if the world around them had already disappeared.

"I finally get to hug you, Rhone..." Scalia whispered, her voice trembling. "I've been longing for this kind of love ever since I was a kid."

Tears slowly rolled down her cheeks.

"Aww... my dear baby." Rhone gently wrapped his arms around her even tighter. "Don't worry. Hubby is here. Let it all out."

"I'm sorry..." she sobbed. "I'm sorry for dragging you into this kind of mess... and thank you for staying with me. I... I can't live without you."

Rhone smiled softly and placed his hand against her damp cheek, carefully wiping away her tears.

"Darling..."

"You're still beautiful, even when you're crying."

"I'm just glad we finally made it this far... I'm glad you're safe."

He rested his forehead against hers.

For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.

They simply stayed there, listening to each other's breathing, wishing time would stop.

"Just one last route... right?"

"Then we can finally live together?"

Scalia nodded while holding him tighter, afraid that letting go would make him disappear.

"Yes... yes, baby..."

She smiled through her tears.

"Just... one last route."

Their eyes met.

They slowly leaned closer—

2:45 A.M. — Bus Stop

The chilly wind brushed against Scalia's hair as she stood beside the waiting bus, tears refusing to stop. Rhone quietly pulled her pink suitcase beside her.

The streetlights flickered faintly, bathing the nearly empty bus stop in a soft orange glow. It felt strangely peaceful... yet unbearably painful.

"Baby..." Scalia cried. "I can't live without you."

She grabbed both of his hands.

"Promise me... promise you'll never leave me."

"Please..."

"If you leave my life... I don't know..."

"I might start rampaging... I-I don't know anymore..."

Rhone's own eyes filled with tears.

"Baby... me too..."

He kissed her gently on the cheek.

For a second, he wanted to tell her not to leave.

To forget everything.

To run away together.

But reality wasn't that kind.

The bus finally arrived.

Its doors slowly opened.

The loud hiss of the air brakes shattered the silence.

"No..." Scalia shook her head, crying even harder. "Baby... I don't want to go..."

"I wish you didn't have to either," Rhone whispered. "But... we both know we have to. Just like you said."

Scalia nodded weakly.

"Please..."

"Never leave me."

"I promise."

Rhone looked into her eyes with a smile that hid every ounce of fear inside him.

"I'll never leave you, Scalia."

"I love you."

"I love you to death."

He reached into his pocket and carefully slipped a silver ring onto her finger.

"Wear this."

"I hope it'll remind you of me whenever you feel alone."

Scalia looked down at the ring before bursting into tears again.

"Thank you, baby..."

"I love you..."

"I love you to death."

She stepped onto the bus.

As the doors slowly closed, they kept staring at each other until the bus disappeared into the darkness.

Rhone never looked away.

He stood there long after the bus was gone, hoping it would somehow come back.

It never did.

"...And that's the last time I ever saw her."
