"Every Goodbye Knows Something We Don't"
"Part-1"
Paris, France
Morning arrived gently in the seventh arrondissement.
The city had been awake for hours.
Bakeries had already sold their first trays of buttery croissants, café terraces were slowly filling with people lingering over tiny cups of espresso, and somewhere beyond the open balcony doors, a violinist was playing on a quiet corner street.
Inside a cream-colored apartment overlooking rows of elegant Parisian buildings, the smell of fresh coffee drifted lazily through the rooms.
It was warm.
Comfortable.
Lived in.
For Claire Laurent, it had always been home.
For her husband, Cho Min-jae, it had become one over the years.
For their daughter...
It was simply one of the places where she could stop being watched.
"You're taking the blue one."
"No."
Claire didn't even look up from the dining table where she was arranging slices of fruit onto a plate.
"The cream one, then."
"No."
Her husband lowered his newspaper just enough to watch the conversation unfold.
"You've rejected two hoodies without explaining why."
A voice floated from somewhere inside the bedroom.
"They're both too warm."
Claire smiled knowingly.
"You're flying."
"I know."
"It gets cold."
"I know."
"So?"
A beat of silence.
"...I still don't want them."
Min-jae chuckled quietly behind the newspaper.
Claire sighed with theatrical defeat.
"I carried you for nine months."
"And I'm grateful."
"I raised you."
"You did."
"I have excellent fashion sense."
"...Debatable."
Min-jae failed to hide his laugh.
Claire turned toward him.
"Don't encourage her."
"I didn't say anything."
"You laughed."
"It escaped."
A moment later, footsteps padded softly across the wooden floor.
Cho Si-Ah appeared in the hallway with one hand wrapped around the handle of a small suitcase.
Nineteen years old.
Barely five foot two.
Dark hair pulled into a loose ponytail that already had strands escaping around her face.
