CHAPTER ONE

King's Cross

The first day.

The day every witch and wizard dreams about from the moment they receive their Hogwarts letter.

For everyone else, it was exciting.

For me...

It was the day I realized just how invisible I was.

King's Cross Station was bustling with families, luggage trolleys, and children my age trying to hide their excitement. Witches and wizards disguised themselves among Muggles as though it were any ordinary morning.

We weren't alone.

The Potters were with us too. Harry Potter, Ginny Potter, James—already in his third year at Hogwarts—and Albus, who was just as nervous as I was about starting his first year.

The adults chatted as if they had all the time in the world.

Until they didn't.

The moment we reached Platform Nine and Three-Quarters, everything happened so quickly.

Mum grabbed Rose's luggage without a second thought.

Dad already had Hugo perched comfortably on his hip as he hurried after them.

The Potters followed right behind.

One by one...

They disappeared through the barrier.

Leaving me standing there.

Alone.

I stared at the solid brick wall in front of me, gripping the handle of my trunk so tightly that my fingers hurt.

"...Hello?"

No answer.

I looked around, hoping someone would notice I'd been left behind.

Nobody did.

My heart began to race.

How was I supposed to get through?

Nobody had shown me.

Nobody had waited.

I glanced around desperately, hoping to spot Mum or Dad coming back for me.

They didn't.

Even the Potters had gone through with them.

I swallowed the lump forming in my throat.

"It's okay," I whispered to myself.

It didn't feel okay.

As if things couldn't get any worse, a cold breeze swept through the station.
