"Jeez, I couldn't wait to get out of Mr. Chamois's class." Kai chuckled
"Me too."
"I thought he would never stop talking," I replied, holding back my laughter
Kai turned to me
"Iris, did you even study for the ELA exam?"
"You know it's worth 35 percent of our grade, right. "
"I want you to take a wild guess. " I replied, rolling my eyes
Kai started bursting out into laughter
"Of course you didn't."
"Shut up." I scoffed and shoved his shoulder
"We need to go to ELA anyway, c'mon. " I pointed out
"Wanna race?" Kai smirked, his eyes lighting up.
"You know it!" I snickered, smirking at him
We bolted, our shoes squeaking against the polished hallway tile
"HEY, NO RUNNING IN THE HALLS!
Mr. Kanto started to chase after us
"COME HERE!" Mr. Kanto demanded
We skidded to a halt
"What do you kids think you're doing?" He questioned
We turned back, shoulders slumping, and walked toward him
"We were just going to ELA." Kai responded
"Yeah right, in my office NOW!" Mr. Kanto ordered, pointing a stiff finger down the hall.
As we walked, I crossed my arms and glared at Kai.
"See? Look what you got us into."
"What? It's not like you wanted to go to class anyway," Kai joked, leaning closer.
"I practically saved you from failing ELA."
"Yeah, yeah, I guess you're right," I muttered, a small smile breaking through my annoyance.
We slipped into Mr. Kanto's office and sank into the plastic chairs across from his desk.
He leaned over his desk, looking us up and down.
"Care to explain why you two were sprinting like wild animals?"
"Like I said, we were just-" Kai started, but the office door flew open.
Ms. Ellis stood in the doorway, her hands trembling violently against the frame.
"Mr. Kanto, we have a... a situation downstairs. In the cafeteria."
Mr. Kanto stood up, letting out a heavy, irritated sigh.
"What happened in the cafeteria now?"
"This better not be a waste of my time, Michelle."
"We have a code blue," She whispered
Mr. Kanto froze.
"What?"
"You need to come, right now," she urged.
"I'm coming down." Before stepping out, he snapped his gaze back to us.
"You two stay exactly where you are."
He rushed out, the heavy door clicking shut behind him.
