Chapter 1: Arrival In Abuja

Narrator's POV:

The bus rolled into Abuja just as the evening light softened the city into a colour resembling gold. Wide roads. Gentle breeze. An atmosphere that didn't try to hard to impress, because it didn't need to.

Inside the bus, four boards of a chess team stretched, yawned, and tried to remember what their legs were for.
Jayden, the team captain, was the first to stand. Calm. Measured. Even the way he reached for his bag looked like a positional move - no wasted motion, no drama. If chess had a "default setting", it would be him. He was balanced across time controls, comfortable in chaos, at home in structure. He didn't hunt for attacks on the chessboard; he accumulated his advantages like interest in a bank account. And when the position finally tilted his way, he was merciless. Not loud. Not flashy. Just...inevitable.

Folashade (or Fola as she was called by everyone), hopped off next, eyes already alive with energy. Where Jayden built positions, she set them on fire. A natural-born attacker, she didn't "enter" complications - she created them. Sacrifices, opposite-side castling, open files, kings in danger. She played every game like it owed her a win. If the team ever needed blood on the scoreboard, they looked at her board.

David stepped down next with his backpack on his back and his usual quiet excitement in his soul. He was the third board and the newest on the team. He wasn't a pure attacker like Fola, nor was he a positional expert like Jayden. Instead, he liked ideas, tricks, strange resources. Positions that made opponents feel uncomfortable because they couldn't label what was happening. He was most dangerous when he was calm - when he let the game breathe. His biggest enemies weren't his opponents; they were his own nerves - his habits of playing too fast and trying to be clever too early.

And finally, Nicole burst out of the bus like a living bolt of energy combined with a blitz clock that had just hit five seconds.

"Abuja, we are here!" she announced with more energy and loudness than almost anyone else would. But that was just Nicole - always so full of enthusiasm that she sometimes tripped over it. She was the fourth board and Fola's younger sister. A time scramble demon and chaos enjoyer, she thrived in the messiest chess positions imaginable. If the game ever got to a point where both players had under a minute, you could already write her name on the scoresheet. She leaned more on instinct and intuition rather than calculation and analysis. She wanted to feel each chess game she played, not just play it.

Behind the four players came the calm footsteps of their coaches, none other than Mr. and Mrs. Molokwu - both grandmasters, both terrifying in different ways - not because they were harsh (which they weren't) - but because you just knew that much was expected from you when they were around. The group of six - the two coaches and four players - piled into a car and embarked on a thirty-minute drive to the house belonging to Fola and Nicole's parents. They were out of town at that very moment, but Fola and Nicole's mother left her younger sister in the house and informed her beforehand that her daughters' teammates and coaches would be using the house. When they arrived, she was at the door to welcome them. Fola and Nicole ran to hug her as if they were little girls.

"It's good to see you, Aunt Rachel!"

She laughed. "It's good to see you girls too. Now please, pause the bear hug so I can welcome your coaches and teammates properly."

It was a lovely house with a big compound and a quiet street - the kind of place where your thoughts sounded louder than the traffic. After Aunt Rachel had welcomed everyone, the tiredness from the journey kicked in. Bags dropped, windows opened, and shoes were promptly taken off.

Nicole flopped onto a couch. "I swear, that journey consumed half of my life force."

Jayden smiled. "And knowing you, you'll want to recharge by going out or doing some fun activity instead of just sleeping."
