"It's too expensive." I grumbled.

"Too late now." Layla said.

We arrived at my house a little after midnight.

Yeah it was late.

"You wanna just crash here for the night?" I asked.

"Of course, babe. Where else would I be sleeping?" Layla replied.

"You're going to the homecoming with Michael?" Michael was one of the many that asked her out.

She shook her head. "I won't be going this time."

"Why not?"

"I don't have a date." She said.

"You could go with Alex." I suggested.

"That would be awkward." She snapped.

"Alright chill gurl. Don't get your panties in a twist."

She sighed.

"I'm sorry, it's been so difficult sometimes."

"Don't worry. I'll find you a date."

"Now? Are you crazy?"

"Yeah. Crazy is my middle name." If anyone is crazy, it's Vince's best friend, Matt Daryl. He's a total badass.

"That's it! I don't think Matt has a date." I said excitedly.

Layla's eyes almost popped open.

"That Matt? You must be out of your mind." Layla shrieked at me, her face reddening slightly.

"Why not? Let's call him." I cackled. It was a sink or swim for Layla.

Whipping out my phone, I scrolled till I found his number.

"Ready?" I asked.

"Not in the slightest." Layla croaked. I knew she liked him but didn't have the guts to admit it.

She tries to look tough on the outside, but I know she's actually a softie.

"Hello?" I heard a gruff sound at the other side.

"Matt here." He sounded intense.

"Hey, I was wondering if you had a date for Homecoming." I said each word slowly.

"No I don't." He said curtly.

"Would you mind going with Layla for homecoming?" I asked.

Layla was freaking out. Her cheeks have turned red.

"Hmm..." You could hear in the other end that he was considering it."

"Sure, I'll take her." He said.

A grin stretched across my face.

I handed the phone to Layla with a thumbs up.

She told him her address, stuttering slightly.

I couldn't blame her. It was really a last minute arrangement.

"Bye, Matt." Layla said as she hung up the phone.

"Oh my gosh. How can I face him? He's so intimidating." Layla said.

"You can do it, gurl." I said.

"Thanks a million." Layla hugged me.

"You're welcome, gurl." I hugged her back. It was nice that we could just spend some quality best friend time together in the midst of all the drama.

I knew that I could trust her with my secrets.

Liz was at home and she nodded as we walked past her to go into my room.

She was usually okay with Layla sleeping over.

"That guy coming tomorrow to pick you up, is he staying for refreshments?" Liz asked in a conversational tone.

But I could tell she was fishing for information.

"No, he isn't." I said.

"Alright then." She sounded disappointed.

"So are you like... Interested in him?" Liz said.

"Ew no, Liz. It's too early to say."

"I thought it might be that Vince guy. He seems pretty nice."

"No it isn't him." I said curtly. I so wanted to end this conversation like right now.

"Who's it then?" Liz cocked an eyebrows, her eyes questioning.

"It's Jerry." I said pleasantly.

"Oh I see." Her eyes narrowed. It made me think that she was wary of him.

"Make sure he comes in first. I'll like a word with him." Liz said in a stern voice.

"Sure, Liz." I said meekly.

"For the last time, Amanda, call me mom." Liz grumbled.

As Layla and I walked up the stairs, I was anxiously awaiting tomorrow.

What would happen? Something told me that it would be worth finding out.
