June 2017
The roar outside the stadium wasn't something you could fully see-it was something you felt.
It pressed against the walls, vibrated through the floorboards, slipped under doors like a living thing made of light and sound.
Backstage, everything was the opposite.
Quiet. Controlled. Breathing rooms between chaos.
Junghoon leaned against a stack of equipment cases, headphones hanging loosely around his neck, eyes half-lidded like he was trying to listen to the building itself. He had grown taller again-long limbs folded awkwardly in a way that still looked like he hadn't fully learned where his body ended.
Beside him, Jieun sat on the floor.
Knees tucked in. A sketchbook open but untouched.
She wasn't drawing.
She was listening.
Not to music-but to everything at once. The muffled countdowns. The distant footsteps. The way someone laughed near the dressing rooms and how it cut through the air differently than stage noise.
Thirteen felt strange like this.
Not a number. More like a transition someone forgot to announce.
They weren't kids anymore, but they weren't anything else yet either.
A door opened down the corridor.
And everything shifted.
Staff moved faster. Voices sharpened. The air itself changed direction.
Jieun didn't look up right away.
Junghoon did.
Footsteps approached-familiar ones now, even after the long months in Malaysia.
Then-
"Yah, you're actually here already?"
Jungkook's voice.
Not loud. Not performative. Just relief wrapped in disbelief.
Jieun finally looked up.
And there he was.
Older. Slightly sharper around the edges now. Hair damp from rehearsal sweat, black shirt clinging lightly to movement. Still familiar, but carrying the weight of something bigger than when she last saw him.
Junghoon stood immediately.
Jieun followed a second later.
No dramatic reunion. No running. No tears.
Just a pause that stretched too long to be normal, but too soft to be awkward.
Jungkook stepped closer and glanced between them like he was checking reality was still intact.
Then he sighed.
A small smile cracked through.
"You grew again."
Junghoon gave a short nod. "So did you."
That earned a quiet laugh.
Jungkook turned to Jieun next.
She didn't say anything at first.
Just looked at him like she was confirming he was still real and not just something she remembered between school bells in Malaysia.
Then, softly-
"...hi."
That was enough.
Jungkook reached out and gently ruffled her hair like time hadn't passed at all.
But it had.
Because when his hand dropped, he looked at them both a little longer than before.
Like he was noticing something he didn't want to name yet.
From deeper inside the venue, someone called his name.
He didn't move immediately.
Instead, he gestured with his head.
"Stay here. Don't wander off. It's crazy out there today."
Junghoon nodded again.
Jieun didn't.
But she stayed.
As Jungkook disappeared back toward the stage, the sound outside swelled again-louder now, brighter, almost like the world was trying to reach in and pull them apart.
Junghoon exhaled slowly.
Jieun's fingers tightened slightly on the edge of her sketchbook.
And for the first time that night, she wrote something.
Not music.
Just a line in the corner of the page:
it's loud even when it's quiet here.
Above them, the stadium roared like a second sky trying to become real.
And backstage, two siblings stood inside the space between worlds-still small enough to fit inside it, but already starting to change its shape.
