I shouldn’t have been there.
That was the first thought in my head the moment I stepped into the house.
Music blasted so loud it felt like it was shaking my bones, people everywhere—laughing, shouting, drinking like nothing in the world mattered. The air smelled like expensive perfume, alcohol, and bad decisions.
Definitely not my scene.
“Stop overthinking,” Mia said, grabbing my wrist and dragging me deeper into the chaos. “It’s just a party, Lena.”
Just a party.
Right.
The kind of party where people like me don’t belong.
I adjusted my jacket, trying to make myself smaller, invisible. That’s what I was good at—staying out of the way, avoiding attention, surviving.
But tonight?
That wasn’t going to happen.
Because he was here.
Ethan Blackwood.
You don’t need an introduction when your name alone makes people nervous.
I’d heard the stories.
Everyone had.
Fights. Expulsions. Power. Money. Influence.
Danger.
Some said he once ruined a guy’s life just for talking back to him.
Others said he never did anything without a reason.
Honestly?
I didn’t care which one was true.
I just knew one thing—
People like him and people like me don’t cross paths.
Or at least…
We’re not supposed to.
“Don’t look,” Mia muttered suddenly, her grip tightening on my arm.
Too late.
Because my eyes had already found him.
He stood across the room, leaning lazily against the wall like he owned not just the house—but everyone in it. A glass rested loosely in his hand, untouched.
He wasn’t laughing.
He wasn’t talking.
He was watching.
And then—
His gaze locked onto mine.
Everything stopped.
I swear it did.
The noise faded. The movement blurred.
All I could see was him.
Dark eyes. Sharp. Calculating.
Like he was reading me.
Like he already knew something about me I didn’t even know myself.
My breath hitched.
I looked away immediately, my heart pounding like I’d just done something wrong.
“Lena…” Mia whispered. “I told you not to look.”
“I didn’t mean to,” I muttered, trying to steady myself.
But something felt… off.
Like I had just made a mistake I couldn’t undo.
“Let’s just go upstairs,” Mia said quickly. “Away from him.”
I nodded.
Yes. Good idea.
Distance.
That’s what I needed.
We pushed through the crowd, heading for the stairs. I kept my head down, focusing on anything but the feeling crawling up my spine.
But halfway up—
I felt it again.
That stare.
Heavy. Unmoving.
Following me.
I turned slightly—
And my stomach dropped.
He was still watching me.
Not casually.
Not accidentally.
Directly.
Intentionally.
Like I was the only person in the room.
“Why is he looking at you like that?” Mia whispered, panic creeping into her voice.
“I don’t know,” I said quickly.
But that was a lie.
Deep down…
I felt like I did.
And I didn’t like it.
Not one bit.
We reached the hallway upstairs, quieter, darker, the music now just a distant thump.
I exhaled, trying to calm down.
“You’re fine,” Mia said. “You’re overthinking.”
Yeah.
Maybe I was.
Maybe he just looked at me by coincidence.
Maybe this was nothing.
Just a random moment in a random night.
That’s what I told myself.
That’s what I wanted to believe.
Until—
Footsteps echoed behind us.
Slow.
Measured.
Confident.
My body went still.
I didn’t need to turn around.
I already knew.
“Going somewhere?”
His voice.
Low.
Smooth.
Dangerous.
Mia froze beside me.
I turned slowly—
And there he was.
Ethan Blackwood.
Up close… he was worse.
More intense.
More real.
More terrifying.
He stepped closer, his presence filling the space like oxygen had just been replaced with something heavier.
Something harder to breathe.
His eyes didn’t leave mine.
Not even for a second.
“You don’t look like you belong here,” he said.
I swallowed.
“I don’t,” I replied quietly.
Something flickered in his expression.
Interest?
Amusement?
I couldn’t tell.
But it made my heart beat faster.
“Then why are you here?” he asked.
Good question.
I opened my mouth—
But no words came out.
Because suddenly, everything felt wrong.
The hallway.
The silence.
The way he was looking at me.
Like this wasn’t the first time.
Like this wasn’t an accident.
Like…
He had been waiting.
“For you,” he added softly.
My chest tightened.
“What?”
A faint smile touched his lips.
Not warm.
Not kind.
Dangerous.
“I’ve been looking for you.”
The world tilted.
That didn’t make sense.
We had never met.
I would remember.
“I think you’ve got the wrong person,” I said quickly.
“No,” he said.
Calm. Certain.
“I don’t.”
Something cold slid down my spine.
Mia stepped in, nervous. “Okay, this is weird. We should go—”
“Stay out of this,” Ethan said without even looking at her.
And somehow…
She did.
I don’t know why.
Maybe it was the tone.
Maybe it was him.
But she went quiet.
Just like that.
His attention returned to me.
“Do you remember last night?” he asked.
My heart skipped.
Last night?
“No,” I said slowly. “Should I?”
That smile again.
Darker this time.
“You will.”
Before I could react—
He leaned closer.
Too close.
Close enough that I could feel his breath.
Close enough that everything inside me screamed to move—but I couldn’t.
“Because that,” he whispered,
“was the night your life changed.”
My pulse roared in my ears.
Fear.
Confusion.
Something else I couldn’t explain.
“What are you talking about?” I asked.
But he had already stepped back.
Already pulling away.
Like he had said everything he needed to.
Like the damage was already done.
“You’ll find out soon enough,” he said.
Then he turned—
And walked away.
Just like that.
Leaving me standing there.
Shaking.
Confused.
Terrified.
And with one undeniable feeling settling deep in my chest—
That this night…
This exact moment
Was the beginning of something I wouldn’t survive unchanged.
What do you think Ethan meant? 👀
Do you trust him… or is he dangerous?
