The bell rang at exactly 8:03 a.m., which meant Tanaka Saki was officially late.
Again.

She burst through the school gates like a human cannonball, school bag swinging wildly, blonde hair flying in every direction possible. One strand had glued itself to her cheek with sweat, her tie was doing its best impression of a noose, and her left sock had decided to stage a full rebellion by bunching up around her ankle.

“Stupid alarm… stupid train… stupid everything—” she huffed, taking the stairs two at a time and nearly face-planting when her shoe caught on the last step.

She reached classroom 3-B, paused for a dramatic second to catch her breath (which sounded suspiciously like a broken vacuum cleaner), fixed her hair (sort of), and slid the door open with what she expected looked like dignified tardiness.
Thirty heads swiveled in perfect unison.

Mr. Nakamura, standing at the front with the patience of a man who had seen this exact scene at least forty times before, didn’t even flinch.

“Tanaka Saki,” he said flatly, still marking attendance.

“Your sense of timing is… consistent.”

Saki flashed her trademark sheepish grin, the one that usually got her out of most trouble. "Morning, sensei! The train was… uh… conducting an experiment on human endurance today."

A ripple of quiet laughter spreads through the room. Someone in the middle row muttered, “She’s gonna say that until graduation.”
Mr. Nakamura just sighed and pointed to the back.

“New seating chart went up yesterday. Your spot is by the window. Try not to turn it into a daily performance.”

Saki nodded enthusiastically and tiptoed to the back row like she was sneaking past sleeping lions.
That was when she saw her.
The girl in the seat next to hers.

Long black hair cascading over one shoulder, green eyes focused on a notebook, posture relaxed but somehow perfectly composed. She wore the uniform like it was made for her—neat blazer, straight tie, skirt just the right length. No earbuds yet, but her phone lay face-down on the desk like she was waiting for something.

Saki had never really noticed her before. Or maybe she had, in passing, like you noticed background characters in your own life. Suzuki Mio, right? The quiet one who always scored high but never bragged. They’d never spoken. Not once.

Saki dropped into the chair with a soft thump, trying to make as little noise as possible.

The girl—Mio—didn’t look up immediately. She finished whatever she was writing, capped her pen with a tiny click, then turned her head just enough to acknowledge the new presence.

Their eyes met.

Blue. Green.

A beat of silence.

Saki’s brain short-circuited for half a second. Say something normal. Don't be weird.

“Uh…hi?” she managed, voice cracking just a little at the end.

Mio blinked slowly, like she was processing a mildly interesting fact.

“Hi,” she replied, voice soft and even. No smile, but no coldness either. Just… neutral curiosity.
Saki rubbed the back of her neck. “I’m… Tanaka Saki.
Guess we’re neighbors now.”

“Suzuki Mio.” A tiny node. “I know.”
Saki blinked. “You do?”

“You’re always late,” Mio said matter-of-factly, not unkindly. “It’s kind of a thing.”

Saki let out a surprised laugh—too loud for the quiet classroom—and immediately covered her mouth. A few heads turned again.

“Yeah… guilty,” she whispered, leaning in a bit. “But I swear I’m trying to reform. Starting today. Probably.”
Mio’s lips twitched—just the tiniest upward curve. Almost a smile. Almost.

Saki felt oddly proud of that almost-smile.

Then Mio reached into her blazer pocket without another word. She pulled out a single white earbud, held it out between two fingers like she was offering a secret.

Saki stared at it.

Mio raised one eyebrow, very slightly.

Saki took the earbud carefully, fingers brushing Mio’s for the briefest moment. A tiny spark zipped up her arm—probably static from the uniform. Definitely static.

Mio plugged the other end into her phone, tapped play,
and went back to her notebook.

Gentle lo-fi drifted into Saki’s ear—soft piano, faint rain, the kind of track that made the world feel slower.

Saki sat there, frozen for a second, then leaned back in her chair and tried to act normal.
She risked a sideways glance.

Mio was writing again, expression calm, hair falling like a curtain over one side of her face. Her lips were slightly parted in concentration, the lower one
catching the light just so.

Saki blinked hard.

Why am I staring at her mouth?

She snapped her gaze forward, cheeks warming. Nope. Nope. Just… appreciating the music. Totally normal.
The teacher droned on about the upcoming mock exams.

Saki sank lower in her seat, the shared earbud tethering her to the girl next to her.

And somehow, the rest of the morning didn't feel quite so ordinary anymore.
