The ring echoed too loudly in the quiet break room.
One ring.
Two rings. Minho's stomach tightened.
Three ri—
"Hello?"
Relief slammed into Minho. "Oh, thank God!!"
A beat of confused silence from the other end. "Uhh... Minho, what happened?" Jisung's voice was rough, as if he had just woken up.
"You didn't come in," Minho explained, trying to sound casual, but he failed, his previous panic clear in his voice. "It's already past 8:00. That's not normal. Did something happen? Are you okay? Are you even alive?"
"Relax Minho," Jisung chuckled. " I, uh, overslept."
"You overslept?"
"Yea," Jisung yawned. "I was writing a song last night, then before I knew it, it was already 4:00 a.m. and then, this morning I couldn't wake up to my alarm. Sorry if I made—. "
"I wasn't worrying," Minho cut in a little too fast.
"You called me before the sun woke up. "
" I was merely checking on a regular."
"Sure," Jisung mused. " I'll be there in ten minutes."
"Okay, cool. Your latte is waiting for you. "
Silence on the other end, then: "You made my latte before I arrived?"
Minho panicked. "I-uh- it was an accident. I was used to you coming in at 7:30!!"
Jisung laughed, his laughter bright even though it was through the phone. "See you soon. "
Minho hung up, his cheeks warm and bright red.
Seungmin was leaning against the counter, amused. "Definitely not worried, hmm?" He smirked.
"Shut up," Minho said, throwing a dish cloth at him.
Ten minutes later, the cafe bell jingled as Jisung stepped through. He was wearing a beige hoodie and tracks. His headphones were resting around his neck and his hair was tousled, messy. His eyes were half opened, as if he had rolled out of bed and chucked on something random. But still he looked stunning. Minho found himself staring, his heart fluttered unwillingly as Jisung approached the counter with a bright smile.
"Hey," Jisung said brightly, sliding into a bar stool at the counter.
Minho hid a smile. "You look terrible."
"Thanks, you look stressed." Jisung shot back.
Minho placed the latte and muffin in front of Jisung. "Here you go. Hurry up and drink."
Jisung picked up the cup. Minho suddenly realized that the drink was probably ice cold by now. "Wait! I-uh- your latte is not hot anymore," he stuttered, panicking once again. "Should I make another one? Do you want another one? Of course you do...who would want a cold latte?"
While Minho was rambling, Jisung had already taken a long sip of his latte, eyes fluttering shut as if Minho had handed him salvation. "Perfect, as always," he sighed. Minho stopped rambling and stared at him. "Minho, relax, it's fine. A cold latte is still caffeine and for my half asleep brain it's good enough." Jisung laughed.
Minho tried his best not to melt right there behind the counter. Seungmin stopped to stare skeptically before returning his attention to the espresso machine. He was glad Felix was in for his shift today, or the cafe wouldn't be functioning right now.
Jisung carefully unwrapped the muffin and took a bite. "Mmm...raspberry white choc, my favourite." He chewed thoughtfully, watching Minho from the corner of his eye. He was attempting to restock the food, stopping to look in Jisung's direction.
"You didn't have to call," Jisung said when Minho passed by him again. "I would've come in eventually. "
"I wasn't calling because I was worried," Minho muttered.
"Is that so?" Jisung raised an eyebrow.
Seungmin coughed from the espresso machine. "He was pacing," he said, amused.
"I wasn't," Minho glared.
"He checked the clock twenty times in three minutes," Seungmin continued, ignoring Minho. "And he made your latte at 7:50. "
Jisung laughed. "Well, I missed you, too," he whispered.
Minho's heart fluttered.
"Maybe a little. Maybe a lot."
Minho's cheeks flushed and he turned away before Jisung could see. He muttered something about getting back to work before leaving Jisung to his muffin.

Throughout the morning rush, Jisung stayed at the counter, replying to emails and typing essays on his laptop. His eyes would sometimes flick to Minho who was making coffees and taking orders with ease.
"Hey," Jisung said suddenly, after the last of the morning regulars had left. "Can I ask you something?"
Minho stopped wiping the espresso machine. "Depends," he replied, trying to be nonchalant.
"Why do you care so much?"
Minho's heart stuttered. "I don't."
"You do," Jisung said, voice soft but sure. "You worry when my order changes. When I look tired. When I study too hard. When I forget to drink water. When I sneeze."
"You sneeze weird." Minho muttered.
"But you do care about me...and I care about you too."
Minho froze. "What if I admit it...what happens then?"
Jisung smiled, sleepily but warm. "Then let's get coffee or something somewhere that isn't your workplace."
Minho nearly laughed. "A date?"
"Yea," Jisung shrugged sheepishly. "Only of you're interested."
Minho smiled. "Definitely."
They smiled at each other, and it felt like the café lights glowed just a little warmer.
As Jisung grabbed his stuff to go to class, he hesitated at the door. The cafe was empty except for another student sitting quietly in a booth. "7:30 tomorrow?"
Minho's eyes softened. "Yea, 7:30."
"And after that..." Jisung added shyly. "Maybe 7:30 p.m. too?"
Dinner.
Minho nodded once—gentle, certain. "Yea, I'd like that."
Jisung grinned, pushing open the door. The bell chimed like approval.
Minho watched him go, his heart finally settling back into place.
The café was open.
But this time, so was he.
