Jisung put the pan into the oven, setting the timer for 20 minutes. He turned around and saw the mess on the kitchen counter. Used utensils littered the surface. Jisung glanced at the clock. 20 minutes till Minho got home. "Come on, Dori, let's clean up before Minho gets home."
He quickly set to work, doing his best to clean the dishes. After 20 minutes, he had barely made a dent in the never-ending pile. Jisung groaned with exhaustion.
The timer beeped, drawing Jisung's attention to the brownies as he rushed to get the brownies out of the oven, being careful not to burn himself. He set them down on the flour-dusted countertop with a touch of pride.
He had successfully baked a batch of brownies. They looked surprisingly good. The surface was a deep brown colour with cracks revealing the gooey chocolate centre. Maybe a little burnt on the edges, but that's okay.

Meanwhile, Minho was just finishing up at work. It had been a quiet day with minimal meetings and problems, but Minho was looking forward to spending the rest of his day with Jisung.
When Minho entered the quiet apartment, he was greeted by the smell of chocolate and vanilla. Did Felix come over again? As he entered the kitchen, he did a double-take on the state of the space. The flour coating the countertops. The unmistakable baking utensils left unwashed in the sink. But most of all, Jisung. He was standing covered in flour and chocolate stains, and in the middle of this chaos, when he saw Minho, his face lit up. "Minho! Welcome home! Look what I made!"
Minho chuckled. "What? This mess."
Jisung blushed, embarrassed. "N-no. I made brownies. For your birthday. "
Minho reached over, wiping a smudge of chocolate off Jisung's nose. His heart softened as he saw the remnants of Jisung's hard work, proof of the trouble he put himself into to make Minho happy on his birthday. "I see Dori has been helping out." He chuckled, motioning to the cat that was asleep on the counter. Flour coated his head, leftover from the flour Jisung had split.
"Yeah, he's been a great help."
Minho felt his heart swell with love. Jisung wasn't usually good in the kitchen and often avoided cooking anything other than instant ramen. But Jisung knew that Minho liked brownies and had made it his mission to make some for him. The brownie sat in the tray, with a sweet chocolate smell coming from it, a result of Jisung's love and determination.
"Well," Minho said, picking up a knife. "Since you worked so hard on this, may I have a piece?"
Jisung's eyes sparkled with anticipation as Minho sliced through the brownie, the dark brown surface cracking as the knife slid through the dense centre. Minho lifted a piece out. The centre was dark and fudgy, just how Minho liked it. Jisung also inspected the piece, satisfied with the outcome.
Minho took a bite, the chocolate melting in his mouth. His expression was unreadable as he slowly chewed. His silence made Jisung panic. "What's wrong? Does it taste bad?"
"This is actually really good," Minho gushed, finishing the rest of the piece in one bite. "Like really, really good. It's amazing, Sungie. You did so well."
Jisung's face lit up. "Really? Are they actually good?"
Jisung didn't believe it. He cut himself a piece and took a bite. "Mmmm," he groaned. "These are good."
"I told you," Minho smiled, cutting another piece "These are perfect. Jisung-perfect. My favourite kind."
Jisung smiled. A happy, contented smile. Minho pulled him into a hug. "Thank you," he said.
"I just wanted to do something special for your birthday," Jisung said. "You have no idea what I had to do to get my hand on that recipe. Now I owe Lixxie his essay. Oh, the things I do for you."
"But you love me," Minho teased.
"Yes, yes, I do," Jisung smiled softly, tears threatening to fall.
Minho pulled Jisung in for a sweet kiss. "I don't need brownies to feel special on my birthday, all I need is you."
Jisung leaned in for another kiss before hugging Minho again. Minho chuckled, tightening his grip around Jisung's waist. Over Jisung's head, he saw the mess still on the kitchen counter. "As much as I love this, we're gonna have to clean up."
Jisung groaned, pulling away from Minho. "Fine." He grabbed a cloth and began wiping down the counter. Minho joined him, starting on the dishes. Together, the couple quickly finished tidying up.
Once the last dish was put away, Minho and Jisung curled up on the couch. Dori joined them, followed slowly by Soonie, who jumped down from his perch on the bookshelf and Doongie, who finally came out of hiding. "I think today was a success," Jisung said, his head resting on Minho's chest. "I wanna do this again next year. Maybe something different, though."
"What were you thinking of doing?" Minho asked.
"I was thinking, maybe like a cake?" Jisung smiled, hopeful.
"Yeah? A cake sounds good."
"Yeah, but it will be for your next birthday, because I don't think I'll be baking again any time soon."
"Next year, huh?" Minho smiled. "Well, I'll be waiting, then."
