THE QUARRY HELD MORE WALKERS THAN GLENN HAD SEEN IN ONE PLACE IN HIS LIFE.
Rick truly wasn't exaggerating when he returned from burying Pete with a sense of unbridled urgency. Just the sound of the walkers are enough to make his eardrums bleed, but as he stands at the top of the seventy foot drop looking down at the crowd of the dead, he feels like he is floating in the air with no way to land. They are trapped in the bottom like sardines in a can, packed in so tightly that they can hardly move, pushing against the walls of the quarry as if they could expand it with sheer force. They blur together like ants beneath his feet, their movement too quick and too convoluted for his mind to process, and he subconsciously takes a step back, away from the edge.
"Damn." Heath stands beside him as he backs away, blowing air out of his mouth in overwhelming shock.
Glenn turns to look at him, catching the familiar look of fear in his eyes. "That's something else. You ever seen anything like it?"
"No." Heath shakes his head, his Adam's apple bopping uncomfortably. "Never."
"Me neither." Glenn breathes out, licking his lips in an attempt to ground himself before returning back to the others. After working on the wall for hours, Rick had made the decision to hold off on the plan until tomorrow, where they could trigger the movement of the truck. Today was just a dry run, going through the exact plan step by step until they all had it committed to memory.
Rick clears his throat, spinning around to face the entire group of anxious people with a determined gaze. "This is where it all starts tomorrow. Tobin gets in the truck, opens the exit and we're off. Hops out, catches up with his team at red, staying at the west side of the road. Daryl gets on his bike. Sasha and-"
His sharp words are cut off by a sudden and loud rumble. Glenn is immediately on high alert, leaning against one of the cars for stability. If the noise of the walkers were loud, the sound of the ground breaking out underneath one of the large trucks on the opposite side of the quarry is deafening, deepening through his body like a lightning strike. The truck falls with it, crashing down and landing on the walkers below. The boom that follows sounds like an explosion, the dust ricocheting all the way to the top of the quarry before finally settling. But the damage had already been done. The walkers that hadn't been crushed on impact could climb up through the opening created by the falling truck, and the ones left behind have more leverage to get themselves through the tiny gap created on the other side.
There would be no rehearsal plan now.
In a matter of minutes, the walkers would escape and head straight for home.
"It's open!" Rick's voice booms even louder than the chaos ensuing below. "We gotta do this now! We're doing this now! Tobin's group, get moving, go!"
"No, Rick, we're not ready." Carter combats without missing a beat, shaking his head.
