"But fortunately," you whispered, voice trembling, unsure whether this was the right answer or not, "you only got bullets."
He blinked, surprised. His head tilts slightly, eyes narrowing, as if he's trying to decide if you were mocking him or offering comfort. Then, the corner of his lip twitched—not a smirk, not a smile, but something in between. His eyes flickered, full of something, disbelief or maybe, gratitude. Or the strange ache of being seen. "You're strange," he replied softly. "But I'll take that."
He leaned back in his chair, his posture loosening for the first time since he'd sat down. You wanted to say something else, anything, but your throat felt tight, as though words would crumble if you tried. So you just looked at him, really looked, and in that brief silence between you, you both felt understood. Lee Do, however, wasn't interested in silence. He cleared his throat, his expression flat and his eyes sharp with suspicion. "You said you had a list of addresses," he cuts in. "The one that came with the bullets. Do you have it?"
Moon Baek's gaze shifted lazily toward him, as though the question had interrupted something fragile. "Nah," he said, dragging the word out. "I threw it away. Didn't think I'd need it." Lee Do's jaw tightened. "Convenient," he muttered.
Moon Baek chuckled, leaning back. "Relax, Detective. I've got a good memory." He reached across the table, snatching a napkin and a pen. "I'll write down what I remember."
You watched him as he started to scribble—his handwriting was oddly elegant for a man who looked like he'd rather use fists than pens. There was steadiness to his movements, a confidence that came naturally to him. Even the way he held the pen, carried a strange charisma. Lee Do leaned forward, scanning the list as Moon Baek wrote, his eyes narrowing with every new name. His focus sharpened, his fingers twitching slightly on the tabletop. You could see his mind working, connecting dots you couldn't see. And then, suddenly, his entire body went rigid.
You froze. Something in his expression changed—realisation struck like lightning, his breath caught, and for one sharp moment, his gaze flicked from the napkin to you. Then he stood so abruptly that made you flinch.
"Wait—" you began, but he was already gone, storming out of the diner without another word. You stared after him, confused, heart thudding. The lights above hummed. Moon Baek's pen clinked against the table as he finally spoke, calm as ever.
"Guess he found something," he muttered, sounding almost amused. You turned to him, still shaken. "Shouldn't we—shouldn't we go after him?"
He looked at you, contemplating, eyes glinting under the soft fluorescent light, that infuriatingly calm smirk tugging at his mouth again. "Cmon," he said, standing up and grabbing his jacket. "Let's follow him before we lose him."
"Never mind, we don't have a car—"
Moon Baek dangled his keys in the air. "We do now." His grin widened. "Chop chop let's go!"
When you hesitated, he sighed theatrically. "You're not gonna make me go alone, right? I'll get lonely."
Before you could protest again, his hand found yours—large, rough, warm, and tugged you toward the door. The contact made your face burn from excitement and embarrassment. His grip wasn't forceful, but there was a kind of possessive ease to it, like he knew you'd follow anyway.
Outside, the air was cold, carrying that faint Seoul night breeze mixed with exhaust and rain-soaked pavement. You climbed into the passenger seat, dazed, as Moon Baek started the engine. The headlights flared against the darkness. He drove fast, faster than he should've, cutting through narrow streets and following the distant glint of Lee Do's motorcycle tail light. The tires hissed over wet asphalt, the city blurring by in streaks of neon and shadow.
