Eden woke to the muted gray of early morning pressing against her blinds. Her head pounded from too little sleep, and the blanket Kenji had tucked around her still lay draped across her arms. For a fleeting moment, it almost felt safe.

She rose, moving toward the kitchen, when something caught her eye. A thin sheet of paper lay just inside her front door, as though it had been slid beneath during the night.

Her heart dropped. She bent down slowly, fingertips brushing the edge before lifting it.

It was a photograph.

Of her.

Not a professional image, not something that could’ve been pulled from the press. This was personal—taken inside her own home. She was sitting on her couch, legs curled under her, a book in her lap. Her scarf—the very one returned in last night’s package—was looped loosely around her shoulders.

Across the bottom, written in dark ink:
You look beautiful when you think no one’s watching.

Her breath caught. The realization was suffocating. Someone hadn’t just been near her—they had been inside. Close enough to capture her in that quiet, unguarded moment.

Hands trembling, she called Kenji. He answered on the first ring.

“Eden?” His voice was sharp, alert.

“They were here,” she whispered, clutching the photo to her chest. “Kenji, this isn’t just outside anymore. There’s a picture—taken in my living room.”

A pause, heavy, then his voice hardened. “Don’t move. Lock the door. I’m on my way.”

“Kenji—” Her voice broke.

“Stay put, Eden. I mean it.”

Minutes later, he was at her door. He didn’t say much, just came inside, his eyes scanning the space as he moved from room to room, checking locks, windows, corners. When he returned, his jaw was tight, but his voice was gentle.

“You’re safe for now,” he murmured, drawing her into his arms. “I’ll make sure of it.”

Pressed against him, photo still clutched in her hand, Eden closed her eyes. The fear hadn’t left, not completely. But for the moment, she let herself lean into him, trying to believe in the promise he kept whispering—that she was safe, because he was here.
