By the time my shift ended, I felt like my brain had been scrambled, fried, and served with a side of awkward.

The whole day had been a rollercoaster — my dad teasing us, Jay being unbearably smug, and me trying very hard not to think about how I still had the guitar pick in my apron pocket like some kind of talisman.

So yeah, a night at the Echo Room sounded like exactly what I needed.

When I got home, I did the bare minimum to get ready — messy bun, blue eyeliner smudged just enough to look intentional, my favorite worn-in leather jacket, and my guitar case slung over my shoulder. Nari had already texted six times about which booth she was claiming, and Minhee sent me three voice memos screaming about how she was ordering the "good fries" before I got there.

By the time I pushed through the door of the Echo Room, I felt myself start to breathe again.

The warm, dim space smelled like coffee and old wood and faint cigarette smoke from the alley. Strings of Edison bulbs hung over the mismatched tables, and a tiny stage sat in the corner where I sometimes played. Jinwoo was behind the counter as usual, wiping down mugs like the place wouldn't survive without his approval.

"Hey, Bluebird," Jinwoo called as soon as he saw me, using the nickname he'd made up for me months ago. "You're late. Your fan club's been asking about you for twenty minutes."

I groaned. "Don't call them that."

"They literally called themselves that," Jinwoo deadpanned, jerking his chin toward the back booth.

Sure enough, Nari was waving both arms like she was flagging down a rescue helicopter, and Minhee was already sipping something suspiciously neon-looking through a straw.

"You took forever," Minhee said as I slid into the booth. "Did you bring the guitar?"

I tapped the case. "Would I dare show up here without it?"

Nari pushed her glasses up, smiling softly. "Good. You need to play something tonight. You haven't in weeks."

I shrugged, pretending like my heart wasn't already racing. "Maybe. If the mood's right."

Before either of them could harass me further, Jinwoo appeared with a plate of fries and a knowing look.

"On the house," he said, setting them down. "You're welcome."

"You're spoiling us," Minhee said, grabbing one immediately.

"Don't let it go to your head," Jinwoo replied, smirking as he ruffled her hair just to annoy her.
