The first thing anyone ever noticed about Olive was... well, Olive.

It wasn't just her name. It was her hair, a wild cascade of curls the color of freshly crushed olive leaves, catching sunlight in green-gold strands. It was her eyes, deep and warm like the oil pressed from the village groves, flecked with gold motes that glimmered when she smiled. And then there was her outfit-always the same shade. A soft dress of green that swayed around her knees, patched here and there from years of wear, but always cared for as if it were a treasure.

Even her scent seemed to carry a whisper of the olive trees that grew just beyond Lyria's cobblestone streets. When she passed, people would sometimes pause, inhaling faintly, as if they couldn't decide whether they were smelling flowers, fruit, or something entirely her own.

Olive didn't mind the whispers. She'd grown up among them like she'd grown up among the trees-rooted, patient, and content to simply be. Her mother had once told her that her birth was marked by the unseasonal blooming of every olive tree in the valley. To her family, it was a blessing. To some villagers, it was a curiosity. To Olive, it was simply... home.

This morning, she was kneeling in her mother's garden, hands buried in soil. Olive flowers dotted the bushes around her, their white petals tinged with the faintest gold. She hummed as she pinched away wilted blooms and tucked sprigs of fresh growth into the small woven basket beside her. A light breeze carried the scent of crushed leaves and warm earth over her shoulder.

"Olive! Are you listening to me?"

Her mother's voice floated from the open kitchen window, accompanied by the sharp scent of rosemary bread baking in the oven. Olive glanced up, pushing a stray curl from her cheek.

"Mm-hmm," she replied, though in truth she'd missed most of what had been said.

Her mother appeared in the window, hands on hips, a streak of flour across her cheek. "The Festival of Bloom is tomorrow. You'll be entering your flowers again, won't you?"

Olive shrugged. "If I have time."

Her mother gave her a look that meant of course you have time, you make time for flowers. Olive smiled faintly. The truth was, she loved the festival-the laughter, the music, the rows upon rows of blossoms brought in from every corner of the kingdom. But her olive flowers... they were never just for show.

Each one she grew seemed to carry a little of her magic in its veins. When she brushed her fingers against the petals, they stood taller. When she whispered to them, they bloomed even in poor soil. She had learned long ago to keep that part of herself quiet. People in the kingdom respected magic when it belonged to royals or court mages-but when it sprouted from the hands of a village girl, they called it strange.

She stood, brushing dirt from her palms, and began to gather the cut stems into her basket. The petals were pale now, but she knew that under the lamplight tonight they'd glow faintly, the way they always did before the festival.

The sound of hooves drew her attention toward the road. Few visitors came to their little stretch of Lyria, and those who did were usually merchants with carts full of wine or spices. But this was no merchant.

A rider in black and gold approached, his cloak trailing like a dark river behind him. The horse was a tall, sleek stallion, its bridle adorned with the silver emblem of the royal crest. Olive felt her stomach tighten.

The rider reined in before her garden. His face was partially shadowed beneath the hood, but his voice-low and clipped-carried an authority she had never heard directed at her.

"Olive, daughter of the herbalist?"

She hesitated. "That's me."

The man dismounted with practiced grace, boots crunching against the gravel path. "By order of His Majesty, King Aldric, you are summoned to the palace immediately."
