“We’re too old for that,” Heeseung muttered.
“Wrong. You’re never too old for skipping class and screaming in a bus.”
Jake blinked. “Do we even have one planned?”
Jay turned. “Not yet. But I have influence.”
Sunghoon looked up. “You have detention.”
“I said influence, not a clean record.”
Jake giggled.
The grape bounced off Heeseung’s head.
After school, Jake was packing up when he sneezed—soft and twice, like always. He muttered a quiet, “Sorry,” as he reached for a tissue.
Sunghoon, already half out the door, stopped.
He turned.
“You okay?”
Jake blinked. “Yeah. Just dust, I think.”
Sunghoon walked back into the room. He paused beside Jake’s desk, eyes scanning his face too seriously.
“You’re warm.”
Jake smiled sheepishly. “My aunt says my face gets hot when I’m tired.”
“Are you?”
“…No?”
Sunghoon hesitated. Then gently reached over and fixed the hoodie’s zipper, tugging it up just under Jake’s chin.
“Go home early.”
Jake, soft-voiced: “You sound like my aunt.”
“Then maybe she’s smart.”
Jake laughed quietly. “She is.”
Sunghoon’s hand lingered near the hoodie zipper for a second too long.
Then he let go.
“I’ll walk you to the gate.”
Outside, the sky was blue-gray. Jake sniffled once.
Sunghoon didn’t say anything—but he took Jake’s bag from him.
Jake tried to protest. “It’s not heavy.”
“I didn’t ask.”
Jake smiled to himself.
When they reached the front gates, Jake reached for the bag, but Sunghoon held onto it until the last second.
Their fingers brushed.
Jake looked up, breath caught in his throat.
Sunghoon’s face was unreadable again—but softer now.
“…Text me when you’re home.”
Jake nodded. “Okay.”
“Sleep early.”
“Okay.”
“Eat something warm.”
Jake giggled. “Yes, Mom.”
Sunghoon rolled his eyes. “Shut up.”
But his voice had no bite.
Jake, still blushing, stepped back. “Bye, Hoonie.”
Sunghoon didn’t answer out loud.
But he raised a hand. Small wave.
And stayed at the gate until Jake disappeared from sight.
That night, Jake’s phone buzzed.
> Hoonie❄️♡: Take medicine.
> Jake: …You didn’t even ask if I have a fever.
> Hoonie❄️♡: I don’t need to. Take it.
> Jake: Okay. :)
> Hoonie ❄️♡: And drink water.
> Jake: Are you always this bossy?
> Hoonie ❄️: Only when you’re stupid.
Jake laughed, pulling his blanket tighter. His cheeks were warm.
Not from the fever this time.
Just from being cared for.
