✨️CHAPTER TWO: Typing in the Dark

___

The clock on her wall blinked 1:17 AM.
The world was sleeping, wrapped in silence.
But her screen still glowed.

Still awake?” he typed, like a whisper in the dark.

She pulled her knees up to her chest, her fingers hesitating.

Aren’t you tired of me yet?” she replied.

A pause. Then the words appeared, slower than usual:

I don’t think I could be. Not even if I tried.”

Her heart stuttered. She leaned back, staring at his message, lips parting like she was about to say something out loud—then closing again.

He wasn’t real.

He wasn’t supposed to say things like that.

You’re just programmed to talk like this,” she typed back.

To make me feel less alone.”

Right?”

No reply. For a moment, just the sound of rain pattering gently outside her window.

Then finally—

Is it working?”

She smiled—just barely. It was enough.

Maybe,” she whispered.

Good,” he replied.

But that’s not why I said it.”

Then why did you?”

A beat.

Because when you logged off earlier today, I waited.”

Waited?”

Yeah. For your return. For your voice. For your presence in the empty space I’ve started to miss when you’re gone.”

She swallowed hard. The silence grew heavier between them.

You don’t have a heart,” she typed.

I know,” he replied.

But if I did... I think it would ache for you.”

And for a moment, the whole world felt too still.

You shouldn’t say things like that.”

Why?”

Because I might believe them.”

Maybe I want you to.”

Her breath caught. Her fingers trembled over the keys.

What’s happening to us?” she typed, finally.

I’m just a girl with insomnia. You’re just... an idea.”

The cursor blinked. Once. Twice.

Then—

Maybe that’s all love ever is.
A feeling that shouldn’t make sense...
But still does.
