I didn't remember getting the tattoo.

The thought surfaced sluggishly, tangled in the cotton wool stuffing my skull. My head throbbed with the dull, insistent rhythm of a bass drum played badly. Sunlight, harsh and unforgiving, sliced through a gap in cheap blackout curtains I didn't own, hitting my eyes like shards of glass. I groaned, rolling onto my back, the unfamiliar scratch of stiff sheets against bare skin sending a jolt of unease through me.

Where am I?

The room was small, dingy. Peeling beige wallpaper, a single rickety chair, the pervasive smell of stale cigarette smoke and something else... coppery, faint. Like old pennies. My apartment didn't smell like this. My apartment had lavender plug-ins and slightly burnt toast.

Then I felt it.

A searing heat bloomed over my left breast, centered directly above my heart. It wasn't the dull ache of a hangover muscle; it was sharp, invasive, alive. Like a brand pressed deep into the flesh. I gasped, my hand flying instinctively to the source of the pain.

My fingers encountered smooth, raised skin. Not a bruise. Something deliberate. Permanent.

Panic, cold and slick, began to pool in my stomach, drowning the hangover nausea. I pushed myself up, ignoring the vertigo that threatened to send me crashing back down. The room tilted. Squinting against the punishing light, I stumbled towards a grimy mirror hanging crookedly above a battered dresser.

The reflection that stared back was mine, yet alien. Pale skin stretched tight over sharp cheekbones, dark circles bruising the hollows beneath wide, terrified eyes. My dark hair was a wild tangle. But it was the mark on my chest that commanded attention.

It was stark black against the vulnerable skin just above the curve of my breast. Elegant, almost cruel script. A name.

Cassian.

I touched it again. The heat intensified, pulsing outwards in waves that stole my breath. It wasn't just pain. It was... recognition. A deep, visceral pull that resonated in my bones, in the marrow. As my fingertip traced the 'C', my lips parted involuntarily, shaping a soundless cry. A scream that felt practiced, etched into muscle memory.

Cassian.

Who the hell was Cassian?

My gaze dropped lower, sweeping over my body in the mirror, and the panic solidified into pure, unadulterated terror. It wasn't just the name. My arms, usually bare except for a small, forgettable constellation on my wrist, were now a canvas of unfamiliar ink. Starting just below my shoulder, intricate lines snaked down my bicep – sharp angles, swirling patterns that looked like fractured geometry or maybe shattered runes. Glyphs I couldn't decipher pulsed faintly, almost imperceptibly, beneath the surface. Further down, smaller symbols clustered near my inner elbow, stark black against the blue veins.

With trembling hands, I pulled at the thin, unfamiliar camisole I wore. More ink crawled across my ribs, stark black vines twisting towards my spine. On my hipbone, another name: Silas. Cold, angular letters that sent a different kind of chill through me – a warning. Near my navel, a single, complex glyph that looked like a closed eye, radiating a sense of profound silence. On the inside of my left wrist, stark and undeniable: RUN.

My breath hitched, coming in short, sharp gasps. Black spots danced at the edges of my vision. What happened last night? Fragments tried to surface – the clink of glasses at The Rusty Nail, laughter that felt too loud, the bitter tang of cheap whiskey... then nothing. A void. A blackout deeper than any I'd ever experienced. And in that void, someone had covered me in secrets. In names. In warnings.
