Walking through school was always a pain in the ass

Walking through school was always a pain in the ass. Why the hell did the hallways even smell like that?

"Have you wished Bella happy birthday yet?" Angela asked while digging through her locker for her third period books.

Lane leaned up against the adjacent lockers, fiddling with a loose thread on her knit sweater. "No, not yet. I haven't seen her yet, actually. She's so ancient now."

Angela snorted as she jutted her head towards their next class. "Yeah, and you're an infant."

Lane glared playfully, almost tripping on the edge of her long jeans. "You better watch out before you get sent to a nursing home."

Angela was quick to clap back, the two going back and forth all the way to English where they'd be watching Romeo and Juliet for a class project. As per usual, Bella walked in with Edward.

"Bella!" Lane said excitedly as she jumped up from her desk, a small box in her hand. "Happy birthday! I hope you like it."

Bella smiled softly, glancing up at Edward before accepting the gift despite her earlier protests. "I thought I said no gifts." she teased, leaning forward towards Lane's opening arms.

The deadheaded girl feigned confusion as she quirked a brow. "See, I just don't recall you ever saying something so heinous before in my life." She shrugged before going back to Angela's side while Bella and her boy toy, twinkle toes, went back to their respective seats.

After having to suffer through Eric's hopeless blubbering and Mike's snide comments, Lane walked off with Bella and the disco stick to their next class.

"Bella!" called Alice as she left over the railing. "Happy birthday!"

I wish I could do that, Lane grumbled in her thoughts. She jumped slightly as she felt cool hands sneak around her waist under her sweater.

"I bet you could, darlin'." Jasper planted a honey-smooth kiss on the side of her neck, damn near causing her to melt right then and there in the halls.

"Are you kidding? I might break something, and then fall on my ass, and then I'd have to touch the floor and I promise you--" Jasper pressed another kiss to the side of her neck, effectively shutting her up yet again.

I know, baby.

Alice practically stalled Bella in a hug before pulling a present out of seemingly nowhere which very well almost concerned Lane.

"I thought I said no presents," Bella grimaced again.

"I've already seen you open it, and guess what? You love it!" Alice said cheerfully. "You're gonna wear it tonight, our place. And you better show up, too, missy."
