Chapter 3: Beyond Human part 1

Start from the beginning

I got ready with the usual procedure. Sterile gown, gloves, eye protection. The others got the rest of the equipment set-up.

The patient was laid on the operating table, given anesthetics, hooked up to an ECG, ventilator, and blood supply.

I took a deep breath.

The wound was quite deep-similar to a stab wound, not all the way through but enough to puncture organs. The location was not optimal. Whatever it was, it severely damaged both the liver and stomach. I decided to focus on the stomach first.

The first set of stitches were in place. I set my sight on the liver next.

Suddenly, his heart went in to cardiac arrest.

I immediately performed CPR, while a nurse readied the defibrillator.

"Clear!"

The boy's heart jolted back to life.

I immediately resumed the surgery, and patched up his liver.

Then it was time for the actual opening. It's quite wide, making it difficult to stretch skin over it.

I requested a flap to fill up the wound, before stitching it shut.

Blood pressure normal.

Breathing normal.

Bleeding stopped.

A sigh of relief filled the room.

The boy was moved to a room, and nurses monitored his condition.

I found myself leaning on a wall outside the operating room. My eyes closed, my breaths short. The nurses and surgeons congratulated me.

Then, I heard a familiar voice.

"Oh, there she is. Hoshigami-sensei" Sakura shouted. She has another nurse next to her.

"Good work on the operation"

"That was actually quite difficult. Especially closing the wound"

"Ho ho, it seems like even a genius like you find some things difficult"

"What's that supposed to mean?"

She smiled. "Oh right, you wanted to ask something right? Go ahead." She pushed the nurse next to her towards me.

I gave a friendly smile. "What did you want to ask?"

"U-umm, Hoshigami-sensei, h-how did you do that?" She asked nervously.

"Hmm, do you mean the surgery?"

"W-well yes, umm... H-how were your hands not shaking?"

Ah.

"Uh, it's a kind of condition I have."

"Huh, are you sick Hoshigami-sensei?"

"I wouldn't say that. It's more like a... defect? I've had it since birth. My hands just don't tremble."

"W-whoa. So on top of your knowledge, your hands can't tremble? I-it's like you're born for this."

I chuckled "I don't think so."

The boy's parents were called. The nurse gave them the run down, and they were relieved to say the least.

The boy eventually regained his consciousness, and I visited him. The parents were in the room. They thanked my profusely, and I asked whether I could speak to him, to which they agreed.

I smiled to him "Hello there, what's your name?"

He was confused, but answered "M-my name is Sakuta"

"So. Sakuta-kun, did you remember anything that happened before you got here?"

His wound was quite extraordinary. The shape. The depth. It wasn't anything I've ever seen before.

His eyes widened, and his face paled. Suddenly, he started crying. In his was extreme fear. His arms hugged himself, like something bad was about to happen.

The parents, rightfully concerned, stepped in to comfort him.

"I-it was big."

It?

My eyes widened with interest.

"What else did you see?"

"F-f-faces... a-and... h-hands. I-it was screaming." His tears flowed faster.
"I... I r-ran."

I got up from my chair. My hands on the bed.

"Where? Where did you see it?"

"H-Hey, can't you see he doesn't want to answer?" The parents shouted at me.

Seeing the situation, I decided to stop probing.

It's a demon. I'm sure of it. Faces, hands, big. What likely happened was, this kid suddenly became able to see demons, saw a big one, it realized he could see it, and attacked out of curiosity.

I walked away.

I have enough information for now. Looks like things are gonna be interesting.

"W-Wait. M-Miss." The boy called out.

I stopped. And turned around. "What is it Sakuta-kun?"

"N-None of my friends ever believed me. They think I'm crazy. D-Did you believe me?"

That question made me flinch a bit.

That suggests this kid has been seeing demons for a while, and no one believed him. That's reasonable of course, you wouldn't believe something if you haven't seen it.

Me however...

I smiled. "Of course I do. After all, I'm hunting them."

The boy's eyes lit up.

"N-Near the river, next to the bridge on the way to my school, Komamoto" he said, excited.

I walked up to him, and pat his head. "Thank you Sakuta-kun, I'll make sure to hunt it for you, so you make sure to get well soon okay."

"Okay!" He said, face absolutely beaming.

His parents were... confused to say the least.

Later that evening, I clocked out early, and I put my plan into motion.
