The next day, I was woken up by the sound of my phone, that I had in my pocket. I tried getting up, but my arms are not moving. Seems like I'm stuck here for a while.
As I lay on the floor of my kitchen, I surmised that last night was not a dream. My split knife is laying on the ground, and my clothes, which were previously white, are now black, and covered in vomit. There's also a horrid smell in the air. Now that I have reprieve, my mind started flooding me with thoughts. What the hell happened last night? What were those things? Where did they come from? They definitely weren't there when I went to bed, so why were they there last night? I don't know what's going on, I don't know what happened, I want to know, I'm curious.
Then, my phone rang again. I tried to muster my strength, and my hands started moving again. I used this, to take out my phone. Who the hell is calling me this early in the morning? It was Sakura-san. I saw my phone's clock from the corner of my eye. 11 AM huh, I guess it's not early anymore. I decided to call her back.
Me: "Hello?"
Sakura: "Noa-san, where are you? Are you not coming in today? That's so not like you. Did something happen?"
Me: "Huh? Well, I guess, yeah, quite a bit happened. But, don't worry about it. Also, yeah I'm not coming in today."
Sakura: "Ah, okay, I'll go tell the others. I guess even a genius like you still has her human side huh?"
Me: "I AM still human you know."
Sakura: "Hahaha. Alright, see you tomorrow then, Noa-san."
Me: "Mmm, see you tomorrow."
She hung up the call.
I tried mustering more strength, and I finally managed to get up. Hm? I definitely remember that creature bleeding a lot of black liquid everywhere. Oh wait, I also remember that creature disintegrating after it died. Maybe the same happened to the blood as well? Hmm. I stood up, and my legs are still very weak. I could barely stand up straight. I also remember black stuff entering through my wrist. Hmm.
AAAH, WHATEVER. I got changed, threw my dirty clothes in the washer, went to my bedroom and booted up my computer. That's right, I'm a scientist, I just need to figure it out carefully, meticulously, one step at a time. Those creatures don't look human, I'll call them Demons for now. Next, I need to figure out what they are.
Hypothesis 1: Seeing Demons is unique.
Hypothesis 2: Demons don't operate like Humans.
Hypothesis 3: Demons have a soul.
...
I kept on writing hypothesis after hypothesis. I decided to confirm Hypothesis 1. I went outside to experiment on a Demon, bringing another knife just in case. Nothing, not even a single trace of Demons.
Hypothesis 67: Demons are only visible at night.
I walked back in, returned my knife, walked to my room, and sat on my chair for a few moments to collect my thoughts, and come up with a few more hypotheses. After all, the implications of this are absolutely fascinating. Demons, real life Demons, just crawling around. I have a feeling this research is going to be my deepest rabbit hole yet.
The evening eventually rolls around, the clock hitting 6 PM. I went out of my room, and looked out the window. I felt the exact same way I did last night. There they are, those horrible looking creatures.
Hypothesis 67: Demons are only visible at night. (Correct)
I ran to my kitchen with excitement, I grabbed a knife, and opened the front door. Hmm, now that I think about it, if people see me walking out of my house with a knife, they'd probably call the police. I concealed my knife and walked out of the house, being careful as to ignore the Demons around me. That seemed to have done the trick, they're completely ignoring me. I think that's why that one Demon immediately came up to me, it just wasn't expecting actual eye contact.
