Close Enough To Burn

Start from the beginning

LISA
Fallback route. North gully.

JENNIE
Copy.

They duck behind a fractured barrier. Gunfire echoes somewhere nearby — distant, but moving fast.

LISA (breathing hard)
If we don't make it out—

JENNIE (sharp)
Don't.

LISA
I mean it. If this is it—

JENNIE (cuts in)
Then shut up and kiss me when it's not.

Lisa freezes.

They lock eyes. Breathing heavy. For a moment, war disappears.

Then—

LISA (strained)
You don't mean that.

JENNIE (soft, hollow)
No. I mean I'm scared to.

A beat. Then Lisa grips Jennie's wrist — not gently, not roughly — just to keep her here.

LISA (quiet)
You don't get to say things like that right before a shootout.

JENNIE
You'd rather I wait until you're bleeding again?

Before Lisa can answer, another blast cuts the night.

They move.

EXT. SHUTTLE EXTRACTION ZONE – HOURS LATER

They make it. Dust-covered, bruised, but alive. The shuttle descends.

Inside, the squad waits — Seulgi, Rosé, Jisoo, Somi — all eyes watching as Lisa and Jennie climb in.

No one speaks.
Until—

JISOO
Did you two kill anyone or just each other?

LISA
Wouldn't you like to know.

SOMI (smirking)
They're still alive. Barely. That's flirting, right?

Lisa slumps into a seat. Jennie across from her. Eyes meet. But no words.

Not yet.

INT. LISA'S ROOM – NIGHT

Lisa stands at her sink. Blood crusted on her cheek. Shirt tossed over a chair. She stares at herself in the mirror — and doesn't recognize what she's feeling.

She touches the edge of the bandage on her side. Then her dog tags.

Flash of Jennie's face. The kiss that almost was. The look in her eyes.

She breathes out.

LISA (to herself)
Close enough to burn.

EXT. OUTPOST 9 – NIGHT – AFTER THE INTEL SWEEP

The wind howls as they crouch behind the wall, breathing in sync, the moonlight catching sweat on their brows.

Lisa reloads her weapon silently. Jennie scans the area, pulse hammering.

JENNIE (whispers)
Do you ever get tired of pretending?

Lisa doesn't look at her.

LISA
Of what?

JENNIE
That none of this gets to you.

LISA (dryly)
You'd prefer me weeping into your arms right now?

JENNIE
Wouldn't hate it.

Silence.
Then, unexpectedly—

LISA (softly)
You think it's easy, being me? I have rules for a reason.
