Mark sat behind his desk, his fingers drumming absently on the edge as he skimmed through listings. The office was quiet, the kind of calm that came with knowing that the day would unfold exactly as expected. Another round of calls, a few meetings with prospective buyers, maybe a sale or two—standard stuff for a realtor like him. Nothing ever really surprised him anymore.
That was, until she walked in.
The door swung open without warning, and Mark's eyes snapped up. She stepped into the office with an air of confidence that immediately shifted the mood in the room. She wasn't like the usual walk-ins. Most people came in with some idea of what they wanted, but little real knowledge of how to get it. But this woman—she was different. There was a sharpness in her step, a quiet intensity that told him she wasn't here to waste time.
Mark stood as she approached the desk, his gaze tracking every movement. She was tall, her brown hair falling in loose waves around her shoulders, and the way she carried herself said she knew exactly who she was. She wasn't here for small talk or idle chatter. She had a purpose.
"Can I help you?" he asked, his voice neutral, though there was something about her presence that made him want to pay closer attention.
She glanced around the office quickly before her eyes locked onto his. "I'm looking to buy a house."
There was no hesitation in her voice, no question mark at the end of her statement. Most people came in with vague ideas, asking a million questions. But this woman, she was clear, direct. He liked that.
"Any particular area?" he asked, leaning forward slightly. It was a question that usually opened up the floodgates of small talk, but he had a feeling it wouldn't be the case here.
She gave him a small, almost imperceptible shrug. "Somewhere quiet. Somewhere I can... breathe."
Mark studied her, taking in the way she spoke, the way her words carried weight. She wasn't asking for a generic house. She was looking for something more—something that couldn't be found in just any listing. She wanted a home.
He moved around the desk, standing up straight as he approached her. "I have a few properties in mind," he said, trying to keep his voice steady, but something about her made him feel like this was going to be anything but a regular transaction. "But I'll warn you, nothing I show you will be like the usual open house. This is different."
Her gaze didn't leave his, and for a moment, the air between them seemed to thicken. She was sizing him up, just as he was doing to her, and Mark couldn't help but feel like he was in uncharted territory.
"We'll see about that," she said, her voice low and calm, as if daring him to show her something more than the ordinary.
She sat down across from him, her posture straight, her presence filling the room in a way that made Mark realize just how much he wanted to impress her. He reached into a drawer, pulling out a brochure for a property he thought might catch her eye. He slid it across the desk toward her, their fingers brushing just briefly as she took it.
"Do you have a budget?" Mark asked, his words coming out a little rougher than he intended. It wasn't about the price—he could sell her anything he showed her, no problem. But something about this felt different. She was different.
She looked at him, her gaze intense, before answering in a tone that was calm but unwavering. "I want a home, not just a house."
Mark's heart skipped a beat. There it was again—the thing that made her stand out. She wasn't after the standard offering. She wasn't interested in just a place to live; she was looking for something that resonated deeper than square footage or location.
The silence in the room thickened as Mark felt something shift inside him. She wasn't just another client. She wasn't like the others who wandered in and out of his life. She was different. And yet, he already knew this—knew it as well as he knew his own name. The way she looked at him, the confidence in her voice, the way she made him feel as though he were standing on the edge of something he couldn't control—Mark didn't need to know her to feel like he was already falling.
"I think I know just the place for you," he said, his voice catching slightly.
She smiled faintly, but there was no way she could have known how much that simple smile affected him.
He felt a sudden rush of heat rise in his chest, his thoughts scattering. There was something magnetic about her, something that pulled at him more strongly than any sale ever had. She hadn't even said much, but Mark already found himself imagining showing her the house, watching her step through the door, seeing that look on her face when she realized it was the one.
She was already in his mind, her face an image he couldn't shake, her voice echoing in his head. But she didn't know that. To her, this was just business, just another realtor and client transaction.
But Mark?
He already knew he couldn't stop thinking about her. His obsession was already starting to take root, twisting around his thoughts. The way her eyes lingered on him, the way she spoke so effortlessly, how her scent seemed to linger even after she'd walked out of the office—it was enough to make him feel like he was losing control.
She stood up to leave, and he couldn't stop himself from following her with his eyes, every step she took carving itself into his memory.
She walked out, the door closing behind her with a soft click, and for a moment, Mark didn't move. He just sat there, staring at the spot where she'd been, as the weight of what had just happened settled over him.
He was already obsessed with her. And she didn't even know it yet.
